Samuel Eto’o elected as Cameroon FA president

YAOUNDE— Former Barcelona and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o has been elected as the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) on Saturday.

Eto’o saw off challenge from the interim President of Fecafoot, Seidou Mbombo Njoya after five other candidates opted out of the electoral race.

Prior to the election, Eto’o was acting as the global ambassador for the Qatar 2022 World Cup while Mbombo Njoya is currently the fourth vice-president of the Confederation of African Football.

The election took place at the Hotel Mont Febe in Yaounde and it was supervised by the president of the Fecafoot electoral commission, Glibert Schlick.

Eto’o’s triumph at the poll means he will now take charge of the smooth running of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon between Jan 9 and Feb 6.

The 40-year-old won the continental title twice with the Indomitable Lions in 2000 and 2002, and he is celebrated as one of the icons of Cameroon football after claiming the African Player of the Year award for a record four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010).

Back in September, Eto’o declared his candidacy for the top leadership position in Cameroonian football with the target of revamping the sport in the Central African nation.

Eto’o, who spent the majority of his playing career in Spain, had stints at Real Madrid, Leganes, Espanyol, Mallorca and Barcelona between 1997 and 2009 where he won several laurels including La Liga, Copa del Rey, Uefa Champions League, Fifa Club World Cup amongst others.

He continued his winning sojourn at Inter Milan for two years before he moved to Turkey’s Anzhi Makhachkala and England where he turned out for Chelsea and Everton.

The African legend ended his playing career in Qatar in 2019, four years after he called time on his international career that produced 56 goals in 118 games for Cameroon.

Three ATM fraudsters due for court

The festive season is unfortunately the period of the year when the public is known for letting their guard down especially at ATMs when making cash withdrawals. This is when the ATM fraudsters capitalize on the relaxed state of mind of bank clients and up their game to lay their hands on your hard earned cash. Unfortunately for criminals, this is also the time of the year when we step up our game to ensure that the public is protected from crime as indicated by the arrest of three card fraudsters aged between 20 and 46 yesterday morning. Our Commercial Crime Investigation Unit teamed up with Law Enforcement and a private security company contracted by banks, Vuzela and conducted an operation in the Cape Town CBD. The three suspects were apprehended in possession of an assortment of bank and SASSA cards and could not provide any explanation when asked to do so. It was also established that one of the suspects is wanted for a Bishop Lavis fraud case. Their vehicle, a VW Polo was also confiscated for further investigation. The suspects are expected to make their court appearance in Cape Town tomorrow to face charges of theft and possession of stolen property.

We would like to use this opportunity to warn the public to exercise caution when using an ATM and never accept help from a stranger. When entering your PIN number, make sure that the keypad is obscured.

In an unrelated matter, efforts by our detectives to bring perpetrates on the wrong side of the law to book landed several suspects behind bars on charges related to murder, attempted murder, assault GHB, common robbery, sexual offences, firearm and drug related charges. The suspects were on our wanted list and evaded their prosecution.

A total of 538 wanted suspects were arrested during these tracing operations.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile has nothing but praise for the members for their dedication in the fight against crime.
