Covid-19: WHO reports record-breaking number of new cases over 2.6 mln

More than 2.6 mln coronavirus cases were registered around the world in the last 24 hours, which is the highest daily rate for the entire pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.

Thus, the organization reported about 296,496,809 cases and 5,462,631 deaths. The number of new cases increased per day by 2,618,130, deaths – by 8,168.

The previous record was set on Wednesday: within 24 hours, the WHO received reports of 2,294,039 cases. Over the past nine days, the daily growth surpassing 1 mln cases was recorded eight times. WHO statistics take into account only officially confirmed information on the number of cases and the deaths provided by countries.

The majority of the confirmed coronavirus cases reported to WHO were registered in the United States – 56,843,327. This is followed by India – 35,109,286, Brazil – 22,323,837, the United Kingdom – 13,835,338, and France – 10,645,841. The majority of deaths was recorded in the United States – 824,175, Brazil – 619,384, India – 482,876, Russia – 313,817, and Mexico – 299,711.

An alleged police attempted murder suspect to appear in court

EASTERN CAPE – A 39-year-old alleged police attempted murder suspect and motor vehicle hijacker will appear in the East London Magistrate’s court on Monday, 10 January 2022.

He was arrested by the East London based Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) team and King William’s Town Flying squad at his place of residence at Ndevana location in King William’s Town on the 7 January 2022.

It is alleged that on the 23 November 2021 at about 17:00 Warrant Officer Swanepoel of East London K9 Dog Unit was on patrol duties in Quigney area, East London when he noticed a suspicious looking motor vehicle. The police officer approached the vehicle attempting to stop the driver. He was allegedly met with a hail of bullets and sustained a gunshot wound on his upper body. The two suspects fled the scene on foot abandoning their vehicle.

The scene was attended by East London Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) members, East London Detectives, Provincial Organised Crime team and Crime Prevention members from the local police station. The matter was handed over to East London based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for probing which culminated in his arrest.

The Hawks investigation has also linked him to armed robbery as well as numerous counts of motor vehicle hijackings in Keiskammahoek and Ugie respectively. He is expected to appear in Keiskammahoek and Ugie Magistrate’s courts soon.

The joint effort of the teams is commended by the Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya.

Queenstown Public Order Police recovers stolen property

EASTERN CAPE – An operation conducted by Queenstown Public Order police in the Cofimvaba policing precinct on 06 January 2022 resulted in the arrest of a 34-year-old male for possession of drugs, possession of a homemade firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.

The suspect is due to appear in court soon.

Media Invitation: Police Minister to pay homage to slain Mpumalanga Station Commander

MPUMALANGA – Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele will on Sunday, 09 January 2022 deliver the eulogy at the official funeral service of slain SAPS member, Colonel Beauty Marivate.

The Colonel who was the Elukwatini SAPS Station Commander met her untimely death on the 30th of December 2021, when she responded to a business robbery, where she was fatally wounded during an exchange of fire between suspects and the police.

The official funeral service will be attended by Police Minister and management of the SAPS from national and the province.

Members of the media are invited to attend the funeral service which will take place as follows.

EC SAPS family pays last respect to one of their own in Mount Fletcher

MOUNT FLETCHER – The SAPS Family in the Eastern Cape converged at Maqhatseng Locality in Mount Fletcher, Joe Gqabi District as they paid last respect to the late Constable Phumla Mabindisa who was stationed at Cedarville SAPS under Alfred Nzo District.

The late member joined the South African Police Service as a reservist in 2004 and was permanently employed in 2011. After completing basic training, she served at Cedarville SAPS until the day of her departure.

The Mabindisa family characterized the late 47-year-old heroin as a disciplined, responsible and caring member who was always prepared to take an extra mile in taking care of her family.

Cedarville Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mbulelo Sigcau applauded diligence, discipline and dedication that Constable Mabindisa displayed in execution of her official duties irrespectively. He further described the loss of one member as a blow to the organisation, as it negatively affects service delivery.

Brigadier Nompumelelo Majikijela, who represented the SAPS Provincial Senior Management, extended a word of gratitude to Mabindisa Family for allowing the late foot soldier to join the South African Police Service. As she closed the file of Constable Phumla Mabindisa, Brigadier Majikijela encouraged junior members to carry on fighting criminality in their respective environments.
