South Africa business people pleased with trade leads generated in UAE

PRETORIA, South African businesspeople who participated in the Gulfood Exhibition that took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last week, have said they are pleased with the trade leads that they generated.

They recorded over 4,000 promising trade leads that they hope will soon translate into substantially tangible deals.

The 16 agro-processing companies, including the South African Fruit and Vegetables Canners Export Council (SAFVEC), showcased their products in a National Pavilion that was set up by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).

The main objective of the support provided by the dtic through the Export Marketing and Investment Assistance scheme (EMIA) was to create a platform for these companies to develop export markets for their products.

The Founder of Makhamisa Foods and a Black Industrialists Programme beneficiary, Terence Leluma, was part of the SA delegation.

Leluma, who manufactures unique chilli-based condiments, said his company’s products received huge interest from countries such as Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India and African countries such as Malawi and Kenya.

“The UAE market received our products well and believe our products deserve to be on the global food industry platform. We met a number of prospective clients and secured strong leads. We will be back for follow-up meetings in a month or two,” Leluma said.

“We are excited to have forged these relations. Dubai is the centre of trade and I am honoured to have been offered the opportunity to fly the South African flag high in this part of the world and take our products to the global market.”

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Naturezone, that produces fitness waters and herbal teas from natural ingredients with zero calories, Peter Foulis, described his participation in the show as remarkable.

“We have received quality enquiries and leads. We are expecting great things to follow as we follow up on these leads. We appointed three agents at the show for UAE, Russia and India. Our neighbouring countries Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia have also shown interest in our drinks,” Foulis said.

The Project Manager of RFG Foods, the manufacturers of canned fruits and vegetables and juices, Thasha Thaver, said her stand received hundreds of visitors with a lot of interest from the Middle East and Africa.

“Some existing customers came to look for new products that we have introduced. It was a great week. We have seen the value of attending the show. Being present at the trade shows has improved our turnover and offered a vehicle to create new relations,” she said.

“More South African companies should attend and see what the rest of the world is doing, benchmark and continue to improve products so as to offer the customers innovative products,” Thasia said.

The 2023 Gulfood exhibition is regarded as the largest food and beverage trade exhibition in the Middle East.

According to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Fikile Majola, South Africa’s participation in the Dubai Expo 2020 was part of SA’s efforts to revive the economy and create opportunities for inclusive growth.

“It paved a way to further unlock opportunities by leveraging more trade events in the region, such as Gulfood, which offers a follow-through opportunity for South African firms,” he said.

Western Cape Finance and Economic Opportunities on employment statistics in Western Cape

QLFS: Employment up by 330 000 and unemployment down by 129 000 in the Western Cape

I am elated that employment statistics in the Western Cape increased by 330 000 year-on-year, representing an increase of 14.7%.

In addition, the Western Cape recorded the largest employment increase in the country quarter-on-quarter, with an additional 167 000 employed persons in our province.

This is according to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey, released by Statistics South Africa today.

It is further good news that the unemployment rates, both on the official and expanded definitions, decreased by 2 percentage points and 2.7 percentage points respectively, quarter-on-quarter and by 5.5 percentage points and 3.6 percentage points respectively year-on-year.

This represents a decrease in the number of unemployed people by 129 000 on the official definition, and by 35 000 on the expanded definition, year-on-year.

To build on this momentum and to ensure that we continue to enable the creation of more job opportunities in the Western Cape, the Provincial Government is in the final stages of completing our new ‘Growth for Jobs’ Strategy.

The Strategy envisages a provincial economy that is sustainable, resilient, diverse, inclusive, and thriving. To fully realise this, the Strategy aims to achieve break-out economic growth by enabling the private sector, ultimately generating confidence, hope and prosperity for all.

While we do face significant challenges nationally, including the debilitating energy crisis and the recent grey listing by the Financial Action Task Force, which may increase the cost of doing business with South Africa and act as a disincentive for investment, the Western Cape Government will continue to work to remove obstacles to growth and to create the right conditions for the private sector, businesses big and small, to thrive.

Gauteng Legislature calls for additional SAPS deployment in Westbury

Committee calls for additional SAPS deployment in Westbury

The Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has called for the deployment of additional law enforcement officers in Westbury amidst rising levels of shooting and violence in the area.

This comes after the alleged shooting of more than 10 Westbury residents in the last four days, two of whom succumbed to the fatal shootings.

The Committee has spoken strongly against the situation in the area, calling for it to be nipped before more lives are lost. Committee Chairperson, Honourable, Bandile Masuku said, “The Community of Westbury should no longer live in fear but enjoy their Constitutional right to feel safe and secure in their neighborhood.”

Earlier this month, the Committee wrote to Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, urging that policing services be enhanced in Westbury and surrounding communities like Eldorado Park . In response, he assured the Committee of the Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit’s fulltime deployment in Westbury to get a handle on widespread violence.

The Committee further summoned the Management of the Sophiatown Police Station to appear before it and account for plans to fight violence and crime in the area.

“Evidently, these efforts have not yielded positive results as the area continues to suffer unbearable levels of crime and violence; thus, the Committee now calls for immediate intervention by provincial law enforcement agencies to restore safety and security in the area.,” Hon. Masuku continued.
