Kavango Super Cup Festival kicks off this weekend

The annual Kavango Super Cup Festival is expected to kick off this weekend with long distance running on Saturday in Rundu.

The festival which is starting on Saturday and ends on 07 August will start with one, two, five and 10-km distance running.

The event which was initially launched in 2020 aims to showcase the vibrant heritage, diverse traditions and talent in the Kavango East Region.

Various cultural performances and sporting activities such as netball, volleyball and football will feature at the festival, spokesperson of the Kavango Super Cup Festival Roswitha Ghunonga told members of the media on Thursday.

She said the festival has attracted over 100 sporting teams including international teams from neighbouring countries such as Angola, Zimbabwe and Zambia who’ll be competing in various sport codes.

Although launched in 2020, the festival’s first-ever event took place in 2021 featuring eight football teams and seven netball teams.

Namibia’s silver Olympic medallist Christine Mboma also attended the event.

In 2022, over 6 000 people came to witness the event, while 32 football teams, 12 netball and 12 volleyball teams participated.

This year, the women and men volleyball tournament will take place on 27 to 30 July.

The teams competing in this category stand to win cash prizes from N.dollars 3 000 to 10 000 as well as a trophy and medals.

The men and women’s football as well as netball will take place 27-30 July as well as from 02 to 07 August 2023.

The teams competing in this category stand to win cash prizes ranging from N.dollars 6 000 to N.dollars 30 000 including a trophy and medals.

Ghunonga said the event also aims to boost the town’s economy as entrepreneurs will be allowed to set up stalls and sell and showcase their products.

Opuwo, Ondangwa await weekend sport tournaments

The weekend is slated to showcase some of the best football talents in the country’s northern regions, as Opuwo and Ondangwa will hold football competitions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Kunene NamPol Sports Club, an Opuwo-based Kunene Football League Second Division club, will organise their first annual edition tourney at the Newman Katuta sports ground on Saturday, with more than 15 local and visiting football and netball teams set to compete.

Isack Kavasuva, the tournament organiser, confirmed the event to Nampa on Thursday, pointing out that preparations for the two-day event, which will also serve as a platform for exhibitors and vendors, are proceeding smoothly.

Kavasuva stated that the monies come from the club’s coffers.

A total of N.dollars 32 000 has been set aside for the event, with N.dollars 27 000 going to the football category and the remaining N.dollars 5 000 going to the netball category.

The winning netball team will walk away with N.dollars 2 500 and a trophy, the runner-up will pocket N.dollars 1 500 with the third best team to receive N.dollars 1 000 and medals.

The football category winner will get N.dollars 13 000 and a trophy, the runner-up will receive N.dollars 8 000, and the semi-final losers will each receive N.dollars 3 000. Football teams are set to register with N.dollars 1 700, while netball teams must register with N.dollars 600.

The other comparable event is scheduled for the Andimba Toivo ya Toivo sports field in Ondangwa, where the Ondangwa Masters Football Club will organise their first-ever football edition, which is expected to draw more than 60 teams in both youth and veterans categories.

According to event organiser Sandro Ithana, the competition will be able to give a platform for national leagues to search for emerging potential.

“Because we know the league is on recess, this tournament will be able to provide an opportunity for national league coaches to come scout for raw talent and for league players to come to participate as a pre-season before the league kicks off,” Ithana added.

According to Ithana, the event is open to all teams in the country.

The Ondangwa Masters administration has set aside N.dollars 44 000 for both categories, with the youth category competing for N.dollars 29 000 and the veterans for N.dollars 15 000.

Otuzemba Primary School opens its doors at Opuwo

The newly constructed Otuzemba Primary School in Opuwo officially opened its doors to more than 600 pupils and 16 teachers on Wednesday.

The school was constructed under the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture patronage for N.dollars 25 million on a piece of land that was provided by the Opuwo Town Council, under the then-CEO Petrus Shuuya.

The school can accommodate 900 students.

During the school’s formal opening on Wednesday, Kunene Education Regional Director Angeline Jantze emphasised the significance of education, noting that it is critical to recognise the enormous potential and promise that the new infrastructure will provide.

“This school is more than just a physical structure; it’s a symbol of hope, knowledge, and endless possibilities. It is a place where dreams can be nurtured, minds can be expanded and minds can be transformed,” Jantze said.

Education, she added is the cornerstone of development and empowerment, while it provides individuals with the tools they need to manage the world’s complexity, overcome problems, and create a better future for themselves and others.

“In this school, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and compassion,” she said.

She went on to praise the parents and guardians for their unwavering commitment to their children’s education.

“We recognise the weight of this responsibility and pledge to collaborate with you to provide the best educational experience for your children,” Jantze said.

According to the director, the school attracted learners from other primary schools in Opuwo and adjacent villages to help alleviate overcrowding at other schools.

Opuwo Town Council member of the management committee Forestor Tjijahura also spoke at the event, emphasising the need for an additional institution in town, noting that having the school in the centre of town will reduce the burden of learners having to travel long distances to school.

This will also allow everyone to be closer to the school, as well as alleviate the burden of paying costly monthly taxi charges, since learners are now able to walk to the new school.

Opuwo now has three primary schools, covering pre-primary to Grade 7.

Employers Turn to Business School Grads for Skills of Today and Tomorrow

GMAC survey identifies in-demand talents and hiring projections from corporate recruiters

RESTON, Va., July 19, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Despite unfavorable macroeconomic conditions and looming uncertainties, employers remain confident in hiring graduates from business schools, according to a survey of corporate recruiters released today by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). GMAC, a global association representing leading business schools, published findings from the 2023 survey that explores which skills employers think will characterize the future workplace – and how prepared they view candidates of MBA and business master’s degrees to be.

Employers say communication, data analysis, and strategy are currently among the most important skills for business school graduates – and most say their importance will continue to grow. Notably, U.S. employers interested in tech skills highly value their future importance but think business school graduates could be better prepared on specific technological capabilities. U.S. recruiters – along with their colleagues in the finance and accounting sectors – are also more critical of candidates’ preparedness to leverage some important communication skills compared to other regions and think business schools could better build their graduates’ intercultural skills.

“The outlook among most employers indicates that business schools are on the right track preparing their graduates with the skills of current and growing importance to successfully navigate an information loaded and AI-affected world,” said Joy Jones, CEO of GMAC. “It is our belief that business schools and their graduates will rise to the challenge in upgrading the critical skills of the future – be it cross-cultural competence, Web3 and Blockchain, or digital communication – to allow them to thrive in global, hybrid organizations and make meaningful impact in an ever-changing environment.”

Other Key Findings:

Overall, employers tend to believe business school can offer an advantage over talent without a graduate management education. Employers from Asia and Fortune 500 companies have a more optimistic view of the abilities and advancement potential of business school graduates, but also are more likely to recruit more heavily from “leading” business schools. And as in previous years, employers continue to value talent from in-person programs over those with online degrees or micro-credentials only.

“Graduates of online business degrees should talk about their credentials differently depending on the employer—employers in Asia are more likely to value the degree itself, while U.S. and consulting employers would rather hear about specific skills candidates attained,” suggested Andrew Walker, director of research analysis and communications at GMAC and the author of the report. “Micro-credentials in and of themselves are less likely to impress employers compared to graduate business degrees though the skills they bring are appreciated by some employers.”

The survey also examines how macroeconomic conditions are influencing hiring and salary decisions across industries and around the globe. Encouragingly, even after accounting for inflation, MBA salaries in 2023 in the United States are expected to be higher than 2022 projections, while industry and business master’s salaries may drop. Despite reported recession concerns, 2023 hiring plans remain optimistic, with some anticipated growth in hiring among business master’s compared to actual 2022 results.

About the Survey

For more than two decades, the Corporate Recruiters Survey from GMAC has provided the world’s graduate business schools and employers with data and insights to understand current trends in hiring, compensation, skill demand, and perceptions of MBA and business master’s graduates. GMAC, together with survey partners European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the MBA Career Services and Employer Alliance (MBA CSEA), collected input from 1,028 respondents in 34 countries and representing 55% of Global Fortune 500 companies from January to March of 2023, in association with the career services offices at participating graduate business schools worldwide. GMAC Research also worked with a market research firm to recruit additional participants to make the overall sample more globally representative.
