Benjamin looking forward to next fixture at Cosafa

Senior national football team coach Collin Benjamin says the lack of experience in his squad was evident when they drew one-all against host nation South Africa in their opening match of the Cosafa Cup.

The 2023 Senior Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup is underway in Durban, South Africa. Namibia is drawn in Group A alongside host nation South Africa, Botswana and Eswatini.

In their opening Group A match at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban Wednesday night, the two nations played to a hard-fought stalemate which saw Elmo Kambindu giving Namibia the lead just before the halftime break. The Namibian talisman found himself unmarked at the back post and had the simplest of headed chances to put his side in front after a brilliant cross from Bethuel Muzeu just minutes before halftime.

In the second half, it took just three minutes of play for the home team to be back on level terms when Rowan Human scored his first international goal just outside the 18-yard area. But despite both teams pushing for the winner later in the match, neither side could find the back of the net as the game ended 1-1.

In an interview after the match, Benjamin said he was happy with the way his team started the match.

“We started well. In the areas we call the war zone, we had aggression. We could have gone into the lead way earlier in the match, but our final touch failed us,” he said, adding that Muzeu and Kambindu connected well to score the goal, and credit should be given to them for their hard work.

The coach also added that inexperience hit them when their opponents had a throw-in, but his players could not react fast as they had their backs against the opponents.

“We are still going to work hard to get a point from the next match. We are hopeful of collecting enough points so we can go through to the next round of the competition as group winners,” Benjamin said.

Namibia’s next match in the competition will be against Eswatini. The match starts at 18h00 on Saturday at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

Travellers to SA urged to use Ariamsvlei-Nakop border post

The Roads Authority (RA) on Thursday verified with Nampa that travellers going to South Africa should use the Ariamsvlei-Nakop border post.

Roads Authority Corporate Communications Manager Hileni Fillemon said that travellers and commercial vehicles heading to South Africa are advised to use the Ariamsvlei-Nakop border point.

“The border post at Noordoewer is open, however, the border post at Vioolsdrift is closed due to road construction between the two borders. The immigration officers at the Noordoewer border post observes private vehicles travelling at their own risk through the Noordoewer border crossing to Vioolsdrift,” Fillemon said.

She said the Vioolsdrift border post may re-open in mid-July for travellers and commercial trucks travelling from Namibia to South Africa.

The Vioolsdrift border station has been closed due to flooding and severe rainfall in South Africa’s Northern Cape and south western Namibia.

Man allegedly rapes teenager at Rosh Pinah

A man allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl at Rosh Pinah on Wednesday.

The Namibian Police Force in a crime report on Thursday said the girl was hitchhiking to Noordoewer when the 49-year-old man picked her up and took her to his house in Rosh Pinah.

The incident allegedly occurred between 14h00 and 16h00.

“The victim was flagging down a vehicle to help her return to Noordoewer when the suspect saw her. He pulled over and took her to his house,” the crime report said.

Olufuko festival serves as one-stop shop for multitude of services

Festivals offer a distinct chance to promote products and offerings, as well as convenient access to services that would otherwise be unavailable, attendees say.

Elizabeth Luyango, who attended the Olufuko Cultural Festival in Outapi, said that such events offer a unique chance for the public in small towns to access services and resources that are typically not readily available.

Luyango stated that she first went to the offices of the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) in the town. However, upon encountering a queue, she made the decision to attend the festival instead.

“When I came here there was no queue and the officials asked me to sit down right away,” she noted.

Luyango further added she was impressed with the services provided.

NamRA’s Senior Tax Officer for the Northern Regions, Olga Indongo, stated that their presence at the festival is a triumph, as they handle approximately 20 to 30 clients each day.

“We meet them halfway by preventing clients from having to visit our regional offices which may be a bit far. Instead, clients can conveniently submit their tax returns at the festival, where NamRA assists with portal registration and submission. This accomplishment is significant for NamRA,” she explained.

Indongo also indicated that the primary reason for individuals not submitting their tax returns online was due to forgetting their passwords. To address this issue, they assisted by resetting passwords and providing guidance on utilising the online platform.

She additionally urged taxpayers to promptly file their tax returns and take full advantage of the tax amnesty programme which will lapse in October 2024.

Selma Shaanika from Catholic AIDS Action, a national advocacy group that engages in a myriad of focal areas such as HIV testing, TB treatment, GBV prevention and mitigation, after school programmes and soup kitchens, said the entity is positive about its participation at this year’s Olufuko festival.

Shaanika said the festival presented an opportune platform to educate the public on their mandate as well as the various advocacy initiatives they undertake for the betterment of the Namibian society.

Catholic AIDS Action collaborates with various stakeholders as well as other developmental partners to foster a healthy attitude and outlook towards life.

The Lead Innovation Summit à New York

NEW YORK et HONG KONG, 05 juill.
