Innovation key to thriving in a changing world, says Minister Patel

Business as usual is no longer an option, and the ability to innovate and adapt in a world characterised by volatility and fractiousness is the key to thriving, says Trade, Industry and Competition Minister, Ebrahim Patel.

“Today, the world is more polarised, climate change is more pressing and the speed of technological innovation is increasing rapidly.

“These trends in turn are reshaping our economies and societies in more profound ways than many could project,” Patel said on Tuesday.

The Minister officially opened the BRICS Business Forum as South Africa hosts the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and China at the 15th BRICS Summit.

The event, which kicked off on Tuesday, will wrap up on Thursday. The summit brings together 1 200 delegates from South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and several African nations.

Patel used the platform to draw attention to the collective economic might of the BRICS nations, which together account for over a quarter of the world’s economic output.

Highlighting South Africa’s remarkable achievements in exports, Patel acknowledged the large contingent of exporting firms, noting that South Africa exported goods worth R2 trillion last year, constituting nearly one third of the nation’s gross domestic product.

He praised the establishment of significant institutions like the New Development Bank, emphasising the importance of networks for policy exchanges and knowledge-sharing.

He underscored the BRICS countries’ commitment to a worldview founded on the right to develop independently without relying on others.

Acknowledging the transformative power of industrialisation, trade and technological development, Patel hailed the African Continental Free Trade Area, which unites 54 nations and offers a platform to spur African industrialisation and innovation.

He stressed that Africa is no longer just a raw material supplier but an “emerging force of innovation and industrialisation in the global arena”.

He called on the BRICS Business Forum to explore how companies and firms in BRICS economies can grow and prosper through collaboration and partnership.

He urged investment and trade practices that support the industrialisation and welfare enhancement of developing nations.

This forum meeting, Patel said, provides the framework for forging valuable business-to-business partnerships and contributing to the world’s shared prosperity.

Notable figures such as Dilma Rousseff, the President of the New Development Bank; Fernando Haddad, the Minister of Finance of Brazil; Mozambican Industry and Commerce Minister Silvino Augusto José Moreno, and the leaders of the respective BRICS Business Council Chapters attended the meeting.

FG to construct flyover on Abuja-Lokoja road to curb flooding

Minister of Works, David Umahi, says the ministry under his watch will construct a flyover as a permanent solution to end the perennial flooding on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister stated this on Tuesday during his tour to inspect ongoing construction works on the Abuja-Lokoja road a day after his inauguration into office.

The minister alongside the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello and some directors in the ministry visited some work sites on the road.

According to the minister, the Abuja-Lokoja road is a major gateway that links the southwest, south-south and southeast regions to the Federal Capital Territory and the northern parts of the country.

He said priority should, therefore, be given to it because of its critical role to the socio-economic life of the country.

“We have seen the area that always get flooded at Koton Karfe section and the the only solution to it is to do a flyover on it to fly above the flood level.

“That will really work because it is about 1.6 kilometres which will take five flyovers, you know, multiply by two.

“So we are going to be making a proposal and submit to Mr. president to give us his nod because we are looking for permanent solutions to our problems,” he said.

The minister, however, urged the contractors handling the road project to use concrete , adding that there would be a review and redesign of the road contracts.

He promised to deliver concrete roads across the country, saying they were more durable and could last up to 50 years and were also maintenance free.

In his remarks, the Kogi governor commended the minister for choosing to visit the state as his first field assignment and pledged to give all necessary support to the minister and the contractors handling the road.

Bello noted that construction of roads and provision of other critical infrastructure by President Bola Tinubu’s administration will serve the people better than palliatives.

He, therefore, commended President Tinubu for appointing Umahi as Minister of Works, adding that ”the minister is a field man and will deliver the Renewed Hope project of this Administration.

“For Mr Presidents to deploy the Honourable Minister of Works, just a day after swearing-in, to come and look into this particular problem, is commendable. I think we can ask for more.

“The road is going to be designed in such a way that no matter the flooding that will ever come, our road will stand the test of time, and I thank you sir,” he said.

We have high expectations of Pate as health minister – Stakeholders

Given his antecedents, some stakeholders in the health sector say they have high expectations of the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, turning around the healthcare delivery in the country.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, they said that as someone who had headed the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and served as Minister of State for Health in the past, he would deliver on his mandate as health minister.

Dr Joseph Enegela, the Chief Executive Officer of African Diseases Prevention and Research Development Initiative (ADRAP), said that having served in different capacities in the sector in Nigeria and in other global settings, he possesses the necessary experience the sector needs.

“He is not a man to banter words, so I know if he says he will end medical tourism he has thought it out and he knows exactly what to do to achieve that.

“I think his experiences with Primary Health Care (PHC) will also lead him to correct the issues in PHC delivery as we know that is where most Nigerians seek healthcare.

“I will also suggest that he should look into Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for our major hospitals.

“We have so many Federal Government-run hospitals that are not run efficiently and I think if we go the way of PPP they will become better, though that must run on the backdrop of health insurance,” he said.

Enegela said that it is the rich that seek medical tourism while the very poor cannot even seek healthcare in Nigeria because of catastrophic spendings on health.

He added that presently, the nation’s health insurance system has not even met the needs of the minimum percentage of Nigerians who put up for healthcare insurance.

He stressed that as the coordinating minister of health, it means that all other parastatals under the ministry would also have to work with him to make things better than they currently are.

“I believe our health care delivery will change, this is a man who gave up a global position that has far more clout in the global sphere to come and help in solving Nigeria’s healthcare issues.

“I will ask Nigerians to be optimistic with this man and I know we will get there,” he said.

Similarly, Dr Jonathan Dangana, a Lecturer at the Department of Public Health, Babcock University, said that the health sector in Nigeria had been confronted with countless strikes due to certain agreements reached with government on a number of issues.

He also said that poor and terrible data sources, epileptic and less-funded agencies, brain drain and progressively deteriorating infrastructure are some of the issues plaguing the sector.

“As a matter of urgency, it is my opinion that Pate should put forward his health agenda with clear Key Performance Indicators as this will enable Nigerians manage their expectations.

“Furthermore, he should ensure that community health workers have clarity of identity within the health ministry and structure who in the wake of brain drain have become defector clinical skilled manpower.

“A National Health Summit and with no arm of the narrative left behind; let each entity (associations and unions) come forward with their unresolved issues, challenges and proposed solutions while State governments, Non-Governmental Organisations, the academia, both students and faculty be involved in fashioning a way forward.

“He should revisit the existing non-sustainable funding formula of the health sector to harness how we can or should treat health as a business and not just a social responsibility,” he said.

Dangana said that brain drain is a global pandemic, however, some of the drained professionals are drained out for reasons which the solutions lay within the nation’s solvable range; hence the need to be sensitive to those issues and address them head on.

“It is noteworthy that the expectations on Pate are arguably on the same pedestal as the desire to see the currency return to her glory days,” he added.

On his part, Dr Jafar Momoh, a former Chief Medical Director (CMD), National Hospital, Abuja, said that if given the necessary support, Pate should do well in the sector.

Momoh who was also Chairman, Committee of CMDs, said that Pate knows the terrain and should focus on Universal Health Coverage and access to health care especially PHC delivery.

“So the expectations for him are very high because we have an experienced person coming back to the ministry and we are sure that given the necessary support from both the workers and in the budgeting aspect too; we expect him to do well,” he said.

NAN reports that Pate, a Professor of Public Health, served as Minister of State for Health from July 2011 to July 2013 in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He was also the Chief Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency from 2008 to 2011.

Pate served as the Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population and Director of the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents at the World Bank Group.

President Bola Tinubu inaugurated Pate alongside 44 others, as ministers and ministers of state on Monday in Abuja.

Alleged murderer denied bail at Keetmanshoop

The 24-year-old man accused of stabbing and killing another man here on Saturday, has been denied bail in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court.

Court documents seen by Nampa indicated that Arno Rooi on Tuesday made his first court appearance before Magistrate Unchen Konjore, who denied bail because police investigations are at an early stage.

Bail was also denied because of the seriousness of the case and because the State fears that the accused will interfere with police investigations.

The case was postponed to 02 October 2023 for further police investigations.

Rooi indicated to the court that he will defend himself and plans to plead guilty to the charge of murder.

The State was represented by Iyaloo Haipinge.

Earlier, the Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator for ||Kharas, Deputy Commissioner Nikodemus Mbango, told this news agency it is alleged that Rooi and 25-year-old Elrico Isaacks, had a quarrel prior to the stabbing.

“The reason for the quarrel is unknown to the police. The suspect allegedly took a knife and stabbed the deceased in the stomach once. He then walked up to where he resides and died there. The murder weapon was recovered,” he said.

Mbango said the incident occurred in the Tseiblaagte residential area.

Rooi is remanded in custody at the Keetmanshoop police holding cells until his next court appearance.
