School career fair highlights community development

The A Shipena Secondary School career fair on Friday targeted delegates, exhibitors, learners, teachers and community members to interact with professionals from the vocational training industry and self-employed youth.

It sought to showcase those who make a living by using their talents and self-taught vocational skills.

Governor of the Khomas Region, Laura McLeod-Katjirua added that the event tied in well with the 2018 National Waste Management Strategy, which aims to make Namibia a leading country in Africa in terms of solid waste management standards by 2028.

She expressed thanks to the European Union for the grant finance to the tune of N.dollars 36.8 million through the project titled ‘Improving solid waste management in Windhoek’.

“The initiative is implemented via co-operation between the City of Windhoek (CoW) and sister City of Bremen (Germany), to improve solid waste management efforts in Windhoek,” she said.

Also in attendance, John Pandeni Constituency Councillor Shaalukeni Moonde highlighted that the career fair is an integral part of the objectives and key performance areas of the constituency strategic plan on community development and youth employment.

“As a constituency, we continuously strive to enrich and involve young people in the process of development,” Moonde said.

“When we invest in the youth, we make a long-term investment. Together with CoW, we have seen a considerable need for the development and promotion of innovative ideas for vocational training career paths and opportunities for young people to overcome current economic conditions,” he added.

It is important to promote the innovative use of recycling ideas to generate income, which solves the problems of waste management and poverty alleviation simultaneously, he continued.

The CoW has a school recycling competition programme which is an effort to raise awareness and encourage behavioural and attitude change among school learners.

The project targets 45 schools from low-income and informal areas, of which 10 are pre-primary schools, 15 primary schools, and 20 secondary schools.

The programme strives to promote the City’s awareness initiative through the concept called ‘Catch them Young’.

In their Prospect, Food Security and Drought Situation report availed to Nampa on Friday, the ministry stated that livestock body condition is very poor around the Kalkrand area in the Hardap Region compared to the rest of the region.

“In the Omaheke Region, livestock is mostly in fair body condition in large stock and good to poor in small stock while in the Otjozondjupa Region, and in the southern areas where resettlement farmers are predominantly located, such as Versailles and Groot Aub, livestock conditions are fair in body conditions,” Nghituwamata said.

In the north-eastern regions, livestock body condition range between good to fair.

Meanwhile, in the same report, the ED stated that the overall water supply situation is a major concern in many areas of the country due to poor rainfall received for the season.

Nghituwamata stated that the water supply in the Otjozondjupa Region is fair with boreholes as the water source, however, boreholes are drying up and also need to be rehabilitated in areas such as Otjongombe, Okamboro and Okasuvandjiwo.

“In Erongo, the water situation remains critical especially for Utuseb, Omatjete, Otjimbingwe, Spitzkoppe and Uis areas, while in the Khomas Region, water is satisfactory with earth dams being the main sources,” she said.

She also said water availability in the Hardap and ||Kharas regions is fair. Still, areas such as Snyfontein and Warmbad in ||Kharas have salty water that is not fit for livestock and human consumption.

Rössing Foundation donates over 5 000 books countrywide

The Rössing Foundation has earmarked a total of 5 328 library books to be donated to various school libraries across the county.

This is according to a representative of Rössing Foundation, Lysias Uusiku during the official handover of 200 books at Shaanika Nashilongo Secondary School in the Omusati Region on Friday.

They then proceed to Isak Katali Combined School in the Onesi circuit, were they handed over 150 books to be placed in the school library.

Uusiku indicated that they recently also handed over 200 books to JP Brandt Primary School (PS), Katora PS, 200 to Tutaleni High School in the Erongo Region and 170 to Andimba Toivo ya Toivo SS.

“School libraries are the backbone of our information structure, building a solid foundation for the literacy skills of learners and inculcating a reading culture,” he said.

Uusiku noted that as a foundation, being a key stakeholder in education, they pride themselves on transforming lives through innovation in learning and the value chain.

He then urged the learners to commit their time to making use of the school library, and put reading materials to good use, either for examination or personal growth.

Speaking during the handover, Helena Shikongo, a Grade 7 learner at Isak Katali CS, indicated that they are faced with a huge challenge of communicating in their second language which is English.

“This challenge has a very big negative effect on our academic performance as learners. Thus, the donation by Rössing Foundation came at the right time where we can start reading for self-growth,” she said.

Shikongo stated that the donation towards their school library will really bring them so much goodness in improving their English language skills.

MICT launches regional activation of National Symbols Campaign

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) on Friday officially launched the regional activation of the National Symbols Campaign in the Kavango East Region.

This comes after the campaign was nationally launched at Swakopmund back in June this year.

In a media statement issued to Nampa on Saturday, MICT’s Deputy Minister, Emma Theofelus stated the aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the protocols and significance of the country’s national symbols.

“National symbols hold a significant place in any nation’s identity. They are not merely icons or emblems; rather, they serve as powerful reminders of our shared values and aspirations as Namibians. Our national flag, coat of arms, national anthem, and other symbols represent the unity, pride and diversity that define our great nation,” Theofelus said.

At the Friday regional event in Rundu, Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo stated that a nation that does not respect the singing of its national anthem or its national flag is a lost nation.

“We need to teach our young people the importance of national symbols to promote a common national identity,” the governor said.
