There has been a decrease in the number of traffic lights damaged in vehicle accidents in Windhoek, with fewer than five incidents per month compared to last year, when three accidents would be reported per week.
City of Windhoek spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya, during an interview with Nampa on Friday said most accidents occur over weekends.
“The cost of repairing a damaged traffic light depends on several factors, including the number of signals on a single traffic pole,” Amutenya said.
Replacing a single traffic light can range anywhere from N.dollars 15 000 to N.dollars 50 000, excluding labour costs.
Amutenya said suspects involved in such offences are tracked down with the assistance of the City Police’s surveillance system. Additionally, when the vehicles involved in the accidents are discovered at the scene, the repair costs are charged to the suspect’s account.
The City of Windhoek has said it will dispatch a maintenance team to the Mix settlement to inspect the six public toilets closed previously because of vandalism.
Community members have complained that they have resorted to open defecation because the toilets are locked.
City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye told Nampa on Thursday the toilets were locked because the angle valves were damaged, causing the water to run continuously.
Akwenye said users removed the angle valves to collect water from the toilets instead of using tokens to pay for water. He said the constant running of the water not only leads to constant maintenance issues, but also incurs costs for the council.
He said that in the past the City conducted repairs to these toilets with the intention of handing them over to the user communities for them to manage, control and safeguard as well as to attend to maintenance thereof, but unfortunately the process did not materialise as planned.
“I want to assure the Mix community that the city takes this matter seriously. Due to time constraints in arranging the above, it leaves the City with no choice but to dispatch the city’s maintenance team to inspect the toilets once again, and open such for usage,” Akwenye said.
He noted that one of the key challenges the City faces with the toilets is vandalism and theft. Communities do not assume responsibility for safeguarding these facilities, he added.

Malunga said status of health refers to the overall state of well-being condition of an individual or a group of people, including its physical, mental, and social aspects.
She said mental health is closely tied to sustainable development goals, particularly Goal 3 on good health and well-being and Goal 5 on gender equality.

By gathering here today, we send a powerful message that mental health deserves our utmost attention. TEMECULA, Calif., Oct. 05, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group (Group), part of Nikkiso Co., Ltd., announced today that it has acquired full ownership of its facility in Murrieta, Calif., and 16.4 acres of land to expand its manufacturing and testing operations.
Currently the Group builds and tests cryogenic vaporizers, heat exchangers, process skids, air separation units, and liquefaction products — the expansion will add four hydrogen testing stations on site to support the Group’s growing hydrogen business.
