Teacher Drowns in Uuvudhiya Earth Dam During School Year-End Function

Uuvudhiya – A tragic incident occurred at an earth dam in Uuvudhiya, Oshana Region, where a 26-year-old teacher drowned during his school’s year-end function on Thursday. The teacher was employed at Uuvudhiya Primary School in Omambuku village.

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, confirmed the incident on Saturday, identifying the deceased as Nentanyu Teligola Showeyapo Ashipala. Aiyambo detailed that the incident occurred while the deceased and fellow teachers were celebrating their year-end party at the local earth dam in Uuvudhiya village.

According to Aiyambo, the tragedy unfolded when Ashipala’s colleagues could not locate him after a certain point during the gathering. “Two teachers who were in the water found him submerged but lost grip of him while trying to rescue him, resulting in him disappearing under the water,” Aiyambo explained.

Despite efforts by colleagues and community members to trace Ashipala, their attempts were unsuccessful. The incident was promptly reported to Onkani Police Station, and subsequently to Oshakati Police Station. The Police Special Reserve Force was also notified of the incident.

Aiyambo reported that the divers and the investigation team managed to retrieve Ashipala’s body from the Earth Dam only on Friday. The deceased’s next of kin have been informed of the tragic event.

The Namibian Police Force is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

Namibia Marks 20th Anniversary of International Anti-Corruption Day

Namibia – President Hage Geingob has recognized the 20th anniversary of International Anti-Corruption Day as a crucial milestone in the global fight against corruption. In a press statement released by the Namibian Presidency, Geingob emphasized the detrimental impact of corruption, particularly on the poor, and reiterated Namibia’s commitment to creating a corruption-free nation.

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), President Geingob acknowledged the vital role of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Namibia’s battle against corruption. The ACC’s formation and its operational independence signify the government’s zero-tolerance stance on corrupt activities. Geingob highlighted the importance of the second National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2025, which outlines a comprehensive approach to combating corruption. This plan focuses on five strategic pillars: prevention, public education, law enforcement, deterrence, and harmonization, reflecting Namibia’s dedication to maintaining integrity, transparency, and accountability in all sectors.

President Geingob also pointed to the legal framework supporting anti-corruption efforts, citing significant legislation such as the Anti-Corruption Act 8 of 2003, the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 29 of 2004, the Financial Intelligence Act 13 of 2012, and the Whistleblower Protection Act 10 of 2017. These laws fortify the government’s resolve to eradicate corruption.

International Anti-Corruption Day serves as an annual reminder of the harmful effects of corruption on societies and economies globally. Observed on December 9th, the day marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in 2003, a key moment in the international effort to combat corruption.

The 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day was observed under the theme “UNCAC at 20: Uniting the World against Corruption,” underscoring the collective global commitment to this crucial issue.

Namibian Police Force Promotes Over 200 Officers in Kunene Region

Kunene – The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Kunene Region celebrated the promotion of 206 officers to higher ranks on Friday. The promotion recognized the officers’ commitment, loyalty, resilience, and dedication to their national duty. This event, held in Opuwo, marked a significant moment for the force.

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), During the ceremony, 28 officers were elevated from Constable to Sergeant 2; 86 from Sergeant 2 to Sergeant 1; 31 from Sergeant 1 to Warrant Officer 2; and 61 from Warrant Officer 2 to Warrant Officer 1. Among the promoted officers, 166 were male and 40 female, with women representing 19 percent of those elevated.

NamPol Commander for the Kunene Region, Commissioner James Nderura, presided over the ceremony. He highlighted the critical role played by the police in maintaining law and order in the region. The event, according to Nderura, was not only a joyful occasion but also a recognition of the hard work and dedication of NamPol’s officers.

Nderura emphasized that promotions within the force should honor the officers’ devotion and commitment to their national responsibilities. “A promotion is not just a reward; it carries significant responsibilities, including accountability, commitment, and honesty in upholding the rule of law,” he noted.

The commissioner advised the newly promoted officers to perform their duties diligently, uphold the laws and authorities of Namibia, and maintain high levels of professionalism. He reminded them that with higher ranks come greater responsibilities, especially in overseeing the work of others and serving and protecting communities from criminal activities.

Nderura also pointed out that ensuring the safety and security of citizens and visitors requires a multifaceted approach. This approach involves not just the deployment of resources and strategic planning but also a commitment to community engagement, empathy, and proactive problem-solving.
