Africa’s Fastest Man, Carries Kenya’s Hopes In Olympic’s Gold

Ferdinand Omanyala’s status as Africa’s fastest man has many people believing Kenya’s push for Olympic gold medals isn’t entirely a long-distance objective.

The Commonwealth Games 100-meter champion doesn’t want to get ahead of himself, though, despite posting the second-fastest time this season of 9.79 seconds to qualify for Paris at the national Olympic trials.

‘I won’t say I am thinking of the final,’ Omanyala said. ‘Of course it’s at the back of my mind but the Olympics has heats, semis and the final so you can’t start thinking about the final when you are not there yet – so many things happen.’

Among the sprinters from African countries who have qualified for the 100 in Paris, including Botswana’s world championship silver medalist Letsile Tebogo and South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Omanyala has run the fastest times.

His comeback from a doping ban imposed in 2017 to becoming the 9th-fastest man of all time has inspired Kenyans and has drawn more crowds to stadiums during national competitions.

His 9.7
7 personal best, a continental record set in September 2021 in Nairobi, united a nation in celebration and some Kenyans honored him by naming new born babies after him.

His name and image have been emblazoned on some of the graffiti-covered private minibuses, known as matatus, that serve as the main source of public transportation.

So there’s a lot of expectations for Omanyala to be the first man from an African nation to win the Olympic 100-meter title.

The ex-rugby winger has had to reject assertions from critics that he loses his nerve in major global events, owing to his failure to reach the final at the Tokyo Olympics or the podium at last year’s world titles.

Omanyala had been touted by the American sprint legend Michael Johnson as a potential 100-meter champion at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary but placed seventh in the final. He attributed that to inexperience in dealing with flight fatigue.

He has visibly lost size from his bulging musculature and attributes the changes to
his strategy for this Olympics, where he’s aiming to maintain strength but carry a lighter frame in a bid to run faster and also recover quicker between races.

Omanyala is an example of Kenya’s ambitions for success beyond distance running and among the most prominent athletes affected by a doping crisis in a country where more than 200 athletes have been banned over the last seven years.

Kenya has achieved great success in modern distance running, but a wave of positive drug tests has made it one of the sport’s latest doping pariahs.

Omanyala received a 14-month suspension after testing positive for the prohibited substance betamethasone, a ban which could have cost him any chance of representing Kenya again.

He maintains his case was a result of pain medication he received for a back injury and wasn’t intentional doping.

‘There are those who do it intentionally,’ Omanyala concedes of the doping problem, but he adds: ‘There are those who eat (contaminated) meat and they end up testing positive; there ar
e those who walk into chemists or medication places and they are given medication that have steroids in them – (those) people you cannot put in the same bracket.

‘Don’t judge when you first hear an athlete has tested positive for banned substances, try to hear the story.’

Athletes who are using performance enhancement drugs intentionally are making it difficult for the rest, he said, because any time a Kenyan athlete is running well there will be suspicion that they maybe on performance enhancers.

Barnaba Korir, an Athletics Kenya official, says authorities have ramped up education programs for young athletes across the country to help them understand the implications of doping and avoid it.

Poverty and unemployment are the main factors driving some athletes to use banned substances because they’re trying to pull themselves and their families out of penury, Korir says, and will do so at all costs.

The concentration of talent also means that while some countries can focus testing on a small elite groups,
Kenya has hundreds of distance runners capable of competing internationally from middle distance to the marathon.

The scope of events is broadening.

Kenyan sports authorities are hopeful that the inclusion of Omanyala and Alexandra Ndolo – Kenya’s first representative in Olympic fencing – will increase the medal hauls that have traditionally depended on middle- and long-distance runners.

‘This is one of the best teams we have ever assembled for the Olympics’ Korir said of a Kenya contingent containing 42 track and field athletes, two swimmers, one fencer, one judoka, as well as volleyball and rugby sevens teams.

With a total medal haul of 113 medals, including 35 gold, since first participating at the Summer Games in 1956, Kenya is the continent’s most successful at Olympics.

Omanyala says he wants to leave a legacy in which Kenya produces a world-class sprinter more frequently.

‘For the long-distance races, we have an industry in this country,’ he said, ‘so that is what I want to do with sprints.’

Protest: Police Boss Places Officers on Red Alert

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has placed all police commissions nationwide on red alert as the #EndBadGovernance# continues, to respond swiftly and decisively to public safety and order.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, IGP Egbetokun said it became necessary following the outcome of Thursday’s protest across the country particularly in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Nasarawa, and Niger states where they were incidences of violence.

He called on the formations to be more proactive in protecting the lives of genuine protesters and public infrastructures.

The IGP also underscored the need for the officers to be more professional in discharging their responsibilities particularly now that citizens are expressing their anger through protest.

‘Recall that upon several indications by various groups of their intent to commence a nationwide protest on 1st August 2024, we rolled out several warnings based on actionable intelligence at our disposal indicating that some groups were mobilizing youths for vio
lent protests with the intent to create anarchy in the country.

‘While some groups claiming to be mobilizing for peaceful protests were doing so with violent undertones refusing to cooperate with the Police on measures to be taken to guarantee peaceful protest.

‘On the basis of these intelligence, the Police advised that the protests should be shelved at the instant time.

‘Where the organizers insisted on going on with the protests, they were advised to stage the protest in confined locations.

‘This would have enabled the police provide adequate protection for the protesters and isolate the criminals whose intention was to loot and destroy in the name of a protest. This we were doing in furtherance of our duty to protect lives and property and maintaining law and order.’

The Police Chief also expressed worry about the dangers posed by agitation instigated by some individuals who have shown tendencies to be disloyal to the government of the day.

‘De
spite our suspicions, we showed good faith through professional conduct by providing security at strategic locations all aimed at ensuring peaceful conduct during the protest as the promoters pledged.

‘Our men deployed nationwide went out with a clear brief to ensure that no one is unnecessarily harassed or intimidated. In places where there were court orders, we gave instructions for the observance of the same.

‘Regrettably, events in some major cities showed that what was being instigated was mass uprising and looting, not protest.

‘Those who were in the forefront of promoting the idea of the protest were not around to lead it.’

IGP Egbetokun added that Hoodlums have been let loose on innocent Nigerians and their hard-earned businesses and property looted and destroyed.

‘In spite of the refusal of the protesters, for instance in FCT to adhere to a court order requesting that protest in Abuja should be at the National Stadium, they trooped into the streets, and yet the police provided security for them.

‘At no point did we breach their fundamental rights even as they breached court order.

‘The Police alerted earlier on that terror elements may take advantage of the protests to infiltrate the crowd of protesters with suicide bombers.

‘In Lagos, the EOD team was informed of a suspected IED on Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja. The team responded swiftly and rendered safe what turned out to be an improvised explosive device (IED).

‘Nigeria Police advised law abiding citizens of Nigeria to heed and not dismiss warnings given by the police and other security agencies which were based on credible and actionable security intelligence.’

The IGP warned groups who are hiding under the guise of protest to obey the laws of the land and respect the rights of other citizens.

‘The Police is equipped to respond appropriately to the unfolding situation and will get assistance from other security agencies, including the military if the need arises.’

Egbetokun appealed to all citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the Police a
nd other security agencies during this period.

African Nations Seek Lower Borrowing Costs

The need to lower borrowing costs for African countries has been emphasised to make capital more accessible and affordable for the continent.

This sentiment was echoed by Dr. James Alic Garang, Governor of the Bank of South Sudan and Chair of the Monetary Affairs Committee for the East African Community who spoke with Journalist on the sidelines of the African caucus meeting 2025, holding in Abuja Nigeria.

According to Dr. Garang, reforming the global financial architecture would enable countries to invest in crucial infrastructure and development projects without being burdened by excessive debt.

‘There are things that need to be done for us to realize the potential that we have as a continent, and that is the need to reform the global financial architecture. It revolves around three things: the need to reduce the cost of borrowing, enhance access to finance, and harmonize policies among ourselves, ensuring that the voices of Africa are heard at the table,’ Dr. Garang stated.

He also highlighted critical
areas such as energy access, where the African Development Bank and the World Bank are taking leading roles in supporting initiatives across the continent. Ensuring reliable and sustainable energy sources is vital for economic development, as it impacts everything from industrial growth to education and healthcare services.

In addition to financial reforms and energy access, addressing youth unemployment remains a top priority.

‘The governors are very conscious about the level of unemployment today in the region and on the continent, especially among the youth. As a result, there is going to be a section in the memorandum that focuses on improving youth employment and opportunities across the board. This is not just for one country; it’s from east to south and west to east of Africa. The governors are very conscious and will be ensuring that policies that focus on the youth agenda and youth employment will be addressed,’ Dr. Garang added.

The Chair of the Monetary Affairs Committee for the East African Com
munity maintained that with strong leadership and coordinated policies, Africa can navigate its challenges and pave the way for a prosperous future for all its people.
