Leg six of racing kart challenge churns out impressive performances


WINDHOEK: Round six of the Rotax MAX Challenge (RMC) took place on Saturday with drivers showcasing their skills and talent at the cathedral of Namibian racing, the Tony Rust racing track on the outskirts of Windhoek.

The RMC is a motorsport race formula for karting racing which is owned and organised by BRP-Rotax and its distributors.

On Saturday, racers from the seven Namibian national classes solidified their positions on the leaderboard, with only two legs remaining in the season out of the usual eight. Among the standout performances of the day was Kobus Reyneke’s domination of the senior max category, winning 14 out of the 15 races held in the six legs thus far.

The junior driver once again put up an impressive performance, earning maximum points from the three races held at the Tony Rust racing track.

Reyneke collected 99 points out of a possible 105, maintaining his overall lead on the leader’s board with 484 points. Kian Fussell, who secured his first win of the season on Saturday, follows with 4
42 points, and Heinrich Ross is third with 420 points.

Adrian Glaeser closely follows with 397 points, and the top five is closed off by Marius Zandberg with 376 points.

In the mini max category, the Kaiyamo brothers once again solidified their lead by collecting important points. Despite spirited driving from Cecil Koorts, who is third on the leader’s board and won two of the three races on Saturday, Nande Kaiyamo still leads the standings with 473 points.

His brother, Mandume Kaiyamo, follows with 461 points, and Koorts is just 30 points behind the leader with 443 points.

In the micro max category, Nic Kruger once again displayed his dominance, collecting 105 points on the day, while Kristopher Koudelka accumulated 94 points and Joubert Esbach managed to secure 89 points.

Jakobus Retief ranked fourth with 85 points, and Petrus du Plooy was fifth with 61 points.

Kruger leads the standings with 475 points, followed by Koudelka with 453 points, and Esbach securing the last podium position with 438 points
.

In the DD2 category, Nikita Thieme collected 100 points after winning two of the three races, while Ezequiel dos Santos and Zain Beuthin both scored 94 points from the three races held in round six.

Currently, Beuthin leads the division with 447 points, followed by Thieme with 412 points and Dos Santos with 394 points.

In an interview with Nampa on Sunday, event organiser Jörg Goldbeck said he was happy with the event and looking forward to the remaining two legs of the season.

‘Excellent racing. Leg seven will see the DD2 championship leader win a ticket to the Rotax grand finals that will be held in Italy in October 2024, and this will be the first time for Namibia,’ he said.

Stars continue with impressive pre-season performance


WINDHOEK: Debmarine Namibia Premiership outfit African Stars secured a 1-0 victory against Township Rollers from Botswana in a friendly match at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.

The Namibian team is currently preparing for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League preliminary qualifiers against Jwaneng Galaxy.

In a match that was used to refine their tactics before their upcoming CAF qualifier, the two teams played exciting football with the visiting team dominating the first 15 minutes of the first half. But African Stars gained momentum and started to control the game. However, they couldn’t score, and the first half ended goalless.

In the second half, both teams made several squad changes, hoping to score.

The Debmarine Namibia Premiership and Namibia Football Association Cup champions scored 20 minutes into the second half through substitute Reinhardt ||Gaseb. He rebounded a ball that was cleared by the Township Rollers goalkeeper.

With African Stars leading by a s
ingle goal, the Botswana team tried everything to score, but the well-disciplined Stars’ defence kept them at bay. This secured yet another win for African Stars, who have had three wins and one draw since the start of their preseason in July against teams from Botswana and South Africa.

In an interview with Nampa after the match, African Stars head coach Ronny Kanalelo said the match came at a good time as they prepare for the CAF Champions League preliminary match against Jwaneng Galaxy.

‘This was a good game to assess what we have been practising. We tried our level best to allow every player in the squad to play, and the players gave it their all. I am happy with the outcome, but we still have a mountain ahead of us in Botswana where we will be competing in the preliminary qualifiers,’ said Kanalelo.

He added that the team will be travelling to Botswana on Sunday to start their preparation for the first leg of their CAF Champions League Preliminary clash scheduled for 17 September 2024 against Jwaneng
Galaxy, a team that reached the group stages of the CAF Champions League last season.

Japanese ambassador hosts kendo students


WINDHOEK: Japanese Ambassador to Namibia, Nishimaki Hisao on Saturday hosted children from the Windhoek Kendo Club as part of enhancing kendo culture in Namibia.

Kendo which means ‘Way of the Sword’ is a Japanese sport that arose from the samurai swordsman style, dating back 300 years.

Speaking at the event here, Hisao said the event aims to enhance kendo culture in Namibia, adding that many Namibians have shown interest in knowing Japanese culture, including kendo.

Hisao indicated that the Japanese Government has built over 300 classrooms across Namibia, in addition to availing 163 Japanese professional teachers.

At the same event, former Namibian Ambassador to Japan, Sophia Nangombe emphasised that young Namibians partaking in kendo are privileged in shaping their future, as the sport teaches discipline and good manners which is prevalent in the Japanese society.

‘When I began to learn the Japanese culture, one thing that stood out was good manners, self-respect, discipline, loyalty and high level of w
ork ethics. Kendo makes you a better person and this is what I experienced in Japan, the morality, gratitude, wisdom and honesty and this is what built Japan,’ she said.

Nangombe also thanked the ambassador for bringing the kendo culture to Namibia, noting that Namibia has a very complicated culture and through kendo Namibians can embrace its etiquette.

A 22-year-old, John Kapinga indicated that he joined the kendo classes in 2021, noting the sport teaches discipline, self-respect, etiquette and self-control.

Namibia Kendo Federation president Andre Pienaar said kendo gained prevalence in Namibia in 2015, noting that currently there are two clubs in the country, both based in Windhoek.

‘If we can improve the character of our future generation through kendo and be able to have better-quality Namibian citizens in the end, then we have achieved our aim,’ he said.

Man allegedly assaulted, robbed and raped by two boys


The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Oshikoto Region have opened a case of rape and robbery against two boys aged 19 and 14 years after they allegedly assaulted, robbed and raped a 52-year-old man at Oneputa village.

According to the region’s crime investigations coordinator Deputy Commissioner Titus Ekandjo on Sunday, the incident happened on Tuesday, 06 August 2024 around 21h00 at Oneputa village in the Oniipa Constituency.

The victim resides at Oneputa B village and he sustained injuries on one hand, his face and back but was not admitted to the hospital as he is in stable condition, Ekandjo said.

A case of rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances has been opened against the boys who are in Grade 8 and Grade 7 respectively.

‘It is alleged that the victim was walking from a cuca shop on his way home and was followed by two male suspects who were also at the same cuca shop,’ reported Ekandjo.

He said the suspects demanded money from the victim while assaulting him by kicking and whipping hi
m with a mopane stick all over his body until the victim surrendered all the money (N.dollars 70) he had in his pockets.

‘While the victim was lying down on the ground helplessly due to the assault, the suspects removed his belt from his waist by cutting it off with a knife and undressed him, and had anal sexual intercourse with him without his consent,’ Ekandjo said.

The scene was visited when the case was reported and the victim’s shoes, trousers, two pieces of his belt, and a used condom were found at the scene and have been properly collected as evidence.

The suspects were arrested but the 14-year-old minor was set to be released under the care of his guardians.

The suspects are expected to appear at the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday while the investigation continues.

Man slashes daughter’s neck with panga in Oshana


OSHAKATI: An Angolan man was arrested after he allegedly killed his fifteen-month-old baby girl by slashing her neck with a panga on Saturday.

Chief Inspector Thomas Aiyambo of the Oshana Namibian Police Force Community Policing Sub-division said the incident occurred around 23h00 at Ondulu Nomongwa village in the Oshana Region.

According to Aiyambo, the suspect was asleep with the mother of his child, when he woke up from his sleep saying lions and hyena were coming. The mother of the victim tried to calm him down with other people in the house and in the process he started fighting them.

‘He slapped one of them and proceeded to take a stick and started beating them, of which he hit the baby who was in the mother’s arms and she fell on the ground,’ Aiyambo said.

The baby’s mother then fled with the other two people in the house to a neighbour’s house.

‘When the neighbour came to rescue the baby they found the suspect holding the victim in his hands and with an open cut at the neck, and with a panga with
blood on it,’ Aiyambo said.

The deceased was identified as Maria Nuusiku Lukas.

The suspect was arrested and is detained at the Oshakati Police Station.

Oshikoto NamPol continue to extend mobile services to rural villages


The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Oshikoto Region are on a journey to take services to rural people and encourage them to become informers, reservists, and join the women and men network.

NamPol Oshikoto Regional Commander Theopoline Kalompho-Nashikaku during a community and police meeting held in Omboto village in the Nehale Lyampingana Constituency on Saturday said they want to educate the community to stay away from criminal activities.

She also said they want to patrol the area and the purpose of the Oshikoto Mobile Police is to take police services to the people living in rural areas and enhance stakeholder engagement as demanded by pillar 2 of the NamPol Strategic Plan.

‘We execute charge office duties, provide feedback and progress updates of previously reported cases in that general area, and provide new trends and tips on emerging and dominant crimes in the region such as rape, stock theft, scams, gender-based violence, and assault,’ Kalompho-Nashikaku said.

She said that NamPol official
s participate in the community’s local sport codes such as Owela, Amagusa, and volleyball to strengthen the NamPol and community relationship.

Kalompho-Nashikaku also highlighted that they are planning to set up police stations at Omboto and Oniipa by 2025 and 2026 and they are determined to take policing to a high level amidst limited resources.

A total of 93 people from Omboto, Oshana Shatemba, Ekonghola, Omwifi, and Oshinanyiki attended the meeting, whereby 35 young people from these villages joined the women and men network.

Omboto village headman, Elijah Andjaba said that they have a huge problem with stock theft, gender-based violence, harassment, and child neglect.

‘I am so happy that the police are opening a station here as our village is dominated by stock theft and rape cases,’ said Andjaba.
