Air Botswana launches new routes connecting Windhoek to Botswana

WINDHOEK: Air Connect Namibia has announced the launch of new Air Botswana flights connecting Windhoek to Maun, Kasane and Gaborone, with the latter service connecting on to Durban, South Africa.

The new routes, commencing in October 2024, mark a significant enhancement in regional air connectivity, fostering stronger ties between Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, Air Connect Namibia said in a statement.

Bisey /Uirab, Air Connect Namibia Chairperson and CEO of the Namibia Airports Company (NAC), in the statement said Air Botswana will begin a three-times-per-week service linking Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone to Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek on 01 October 2024.

The route will continue to King Shaka International Airport in Durban, with flights operating on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, creating a new link between Botswana and Namibia’s capitals, as well as expanded access to South Africa’s third-largest city.

He noted that following this, on 01 November 2024, A
ir Botswana will introduce additional services connecting Maun International Airport and Kasane International Airport to Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Both routes will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. These connections will open up access from Windhoek to two of Southern Africa’s premier tourist destinations – the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park, the statement said.

‘NAC and Air Connect Namibia are extremely happy about the new routes that connect Windhoek with various destinations in Botswana. The commencement of these air routes is a culmination of sustained engagements at all levels of government and business to strengthen political, diplomatic, and business relations between our two sister countries,’ /Uirab said.

Air Connect Namibia, established in 2024, is led by the NAC and is a collaborative air service development initiative mandated to improve air access to Namibia.

Oshakati Mayoral Development Fund boosted

OSHAKATI: Standard Bank Namibia has handed over N.dollars 50 000 to the Oshakati Mayoral Development Fund.

The fund was established in 2022 to assist families, individuals and organisations within the jurisdiction of Oshakati as part of the council’s social responsibility.

Handing over the donation on Wednesday, Standard Bank Regional Manager: North West, Hendrik van Wyk said that their decision to support the Mayoral Development Fund is rooted in their core values of inclusivity and empowerment.

Van Wyk indicated that they believe that every Namibian, regardless of their social or economic standing, deserves the opportunity to thrive.

‘The fund is a testament to the dedication of the Office of the Mayor towards the people. This initiative is more than just a fund; it is a beacon of hope for those affected by unforeseen circumstances,’ he said.

He added that by contributing to this fund, the bank is not only offering immediate relief, but also investing in the long-term growth and prosperity of their com
munity.

Receiving the donation, Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango said the funds came at the right time as they have cases that need assistance, such as fire incidents that occurred in the council vicinity.

According to Hango, they developed the mayoral fund to assist people in the town who come to their office seeking help.

‘The fund is our initiative after we realised the need to support the residents who find themselves in situations beyond their control,’ he said, such as incidences of fire which lead to the loss of property and belongings of residents.

Hango indicated that the Mayoral Development Fund focuses on areas such as humanitarian support, sport and recreation, health and education, arts and culture and environment and community.

BoN announces reduction in repo rate

WINDHOEK: The Bank of Namibia (BoN) announced a 25 basis point reduction in the repo rate, from 7.75 per cent to 7.50 per cent, on Wednesday.

Making the announcement here Wednesday, BoN Governor Johannes !Gawaxab said the monetary policy stance will be implemented over the next two months.

According to !Gawaxab, the decision by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) followed a comprehensive review of domestic, regional, and global economic developments.

‘The domestic economic recovery continued during the first six months of 2024, although growth is forecast to decelerate for 2024 as a whole. Inflation continued to moderate, while the growth in Private Sector Credit Extension (PSCE) remains subdued. The merchandise trade deficit widened further while the stock of international reserves remained sufficient to support the currency peg and meet the country’s international financial obligations,’ !Gawaxab emphasised.

He also noted that domestic economic activity rose during the first half of 2024 relative to the
same period in 2023. The growth, !Gawaxab said, emanates from the mining, electricity generation, wholesale and retail trade, tourism, communication, and transport sectors as well as the livestock marketing sub-sector.

‘Looking ahead, growth in Namibia’s real gross domestic product is projected to decelerate to 3.1 per cent in 2024 from 4.2 per cent in 2023. This revised projected growth is 0.6 percentage points lower than the forecast at the previous MPC meeting,’ the governor added.
