5 Palestinians killed in Israeli attack on school in Gaza City: sources

At least five Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school housing displaced people southeast of Gaza City, according to Palestinian and Israeli sources on Saturday.

Palestinian security sources told Xinhua that Israeli warplanes attacked the Shuhada’ al-Zaytun school in the Al-Zaytun neighborhood.

Medical sources said that the airstrike killed five Palestinians, including children and women, and left several others injured, who were then transported to hospital.

The Israeli military confirmed that its air force conducted a precise and intelligence-guided strike on a group operating within a “command and control complex” formerly used as the Shuhada’ al-Zaytun school in Gaza City.

The Israeli military statement said Hamas operatives used the complex to plan and execute operations against Israel.

Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people we
re killed and 250 others taken hostage.

The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 41,182, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Saturday. Enditem

Don urges leveraging China-Nigeria media cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations

Prof. Sheriff Ibrahim, Director of Contemporary Africa-China Research in Nigeria, has called for leveraging China-Nigeria media cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Ibrahim, who is also the Head of Department, Political Science and International Relations, University of Abuja, stated this during a news conference organised by the Chinese Embassy on Friday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the news conference was held to discuss the outcomes of President Bola Tinubu’s recent State visit to China and his participation in the 2024 FOCAC.

Ibrahim underscored the increasing importance of bilateral relations in areas like trade, technology, and cultural exchange, saying the media’s role in fostering sustainable relations and achieving desired outcomes was crucial.

The don noted that China had become Nigeria’s largest trading partner, with investments spanning various sectors, including infrastructure, telecommunications, and agriculture.

He, however, ca
utioned that without effective communication and understanding, misunderstandings could undermine these relations.

‘Media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and facilitating dialogue.

‘By fostering a cooperative media environment, both nations can enhance mutual understanding, dispel myths, and promote collaborative efforts toward sustainable development,’ he said.

Ibrahim proposed several initiatives aimed at strengthening the media ties between China and Nigeria, including joint training programmes for journalists, and collaborative reporting projects on key issues affecting both countries.

He added that it was also necessary to establish an annual media summit to address challenges and opportunities in their bilateral relationships.

The don also urged government and media organisations in both countries to prioritise transparency and responsible reporting.

‘In an era where misinformation can easily spread, it is essentia
l for our media to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accuracy,’ he added.

Amb. Yu Dunhai, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, also acknowledged the significant role that the media plays in bridging cultural differences and fostering a more profound understanding between the two countries.

He said that because China understood the importance of media cooperation, it had been involved in a lot of media exchange training to strengthen capacity building, and promote win-win cooperation between China and Nigeria.

‘Our media will continue to work hand in hand to highlight the success stories of our collaboration and to address any concerns that may arise,’ Yu said.

NAN reports that there is an MoU between China’s official Xinhua News Agency and NAN for news exchanges between the two continental media giants to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Iran denounces Western countries for imposing new sanctions on Tehran

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has denounced certain Western countries over fresh sanctions imposed on Tehran, which was accused of selling ballistic missiles to Russia.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks in an interview with Iran’s IRIB news agency, which was published on Saturday, while reacting to the sanctions imposed by the United States, France, Britain, and Germany on Iran.

“The Western states should know, and it is surprising that they still do not know, that sanctions are a failed tool and they will not be able to impose their intentions on Iran, whether with regard to the nuclear issue or other ones, through sanctions,” Araghchi said.

He stressed that Iran would “continue its path with strength,” adding that although the country had always been open to dialogue and had never abandoned “constructive” talks on achieving a common understanding about different issues, such a diplomatic process should be based on mutual respect, not threats or pressure.

Also on Saturday, Ira
n’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that any claim about Iran’s sales of ballistic missiles to Russia is “basically false,” while referring to the Western sanctions as “a path that not only fails to help resolve problems, but also is part of the problem and will be responded by Iran.” Enditem

Xi Story: Cultivating the sweet fruit of rural revitalization

In September, the air in Tianshui City in Gansu Province, northwest China, is filled with the scent of ripening apples, and farmers like Dong Guihong are busy gathering the early autumn harvest. This year, Dong was joined in the orchard she worked in by a special visitor: President Xi Jinping.

When Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, extended his hand to Dong, she was momentarily stunned by the gesture, but quickly removed her gloves to shake hands, marking a memorable encounter in the local apple production base.

This was Xi’s first inspection tour outside Beijing after the conclusion of the reform-themed third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee in July.

In the orchard, which is part of the production base, Xi spoke with Dong as well as other apple growers and agricultural technicians amid trees laden with ruby-like Huaniu apples, a specialty fruit of Tianshui. He asked details of the quality and
characteristics of Huaniu apples, including the planting techniques, market sales and the daily lives and work of the local farmers.

Responding to Xi’s queries, Dong said that since the beginning of spring this year, she has been busy with all kinds of work, such as tending apple trees, bagging apples, and laying weed barriers.

“With a daily pay of 110 yuan (about 15.49 U.S. dollars), I can earn up to more than 30,000 yuan a year,” said Dong, whose village is not very far from the orchard.

After being briefed by local officials on how the base has ensured the quality and yield of apples by implementing refined management methods, Xi encouraged the locals to aim for greater success in developing the apple industry and live happier lives.

In Tianshui, Huaniu apple cultivation began as early as 1925. With favorable conditions like moderate rainfall, abundant sunshine and mild temperatures, the apple has developed into a high-quality product and Tianshui’s signature agricultural export over the decades.

The
apple production base visited by Xi boasts about 10,000 hectares of apple orchards, which produced 220,000 tonnes of fruit in 2023, with a total value of about 600 million yuan. Across the 25 villages involved, the per capita income from the fruit industry has reached over 8,000 yuan in the year.

Tianshui’s agricultural success is a prime example of how specialty industries have driven China’s rural revitalization, an area of great importance to Xi.

Xi has emphasized the importance of developing such industries on multiple occasions, including his domestic inspection trips. He visited apple orchards during inspection tours of Shaanxi, a neighboring province of Gansu in 2015 and 2022.

In 2015, Xi traveled up a steep, winding mountain road to visit an orchard located on the upper reaches of Liangjiahe Village in Yan’an City. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this very village was where a young Xi spent seven years working and studying as an “educated youth” — urban youth sent to remote rural areas to
“learn from farmers.”

There, the president congratulated the orchard’s owner, Zhang Weipang, on his successful business, saying: “Weipang, you are a rich man now!” He also encouraged locals to stay committed to developing the apple industry.

Like Tianshui, Yan’an has a long history of apple cultivation spanning decades. Today, apples are a signature product of the city’s rural areas, and played a crucial role in lifting Yan’an out of absolute poverty in 2019.

In October 2022, Xi visited the city again, shortly after the closing of the 20th CPC National Congress. This time, when touring an orchard in Nangou Village, he praised local apple growers for their use of drip irrigation and refined management practices.

“This is agricultural modernization,” said Xi. “You have found an industry development direction that suits you best.”

In recent years, many rural areas across China have identified industries well-suited to their local conditions, effectively “planting the seeds” of rural revitalization through i
ndustrial development.

Beyond apples from Tianshui and Yan’an, oranges from Ganzhou in Jiangxi Province, strawberries from Dandong in Liaoning Province, and numerous other specialty products have gained prominence in the market, significantly contributing to local social and economic development.

As Xi emphasized during his visit to the apple orchard on Sept. 11, rural revitalization hinges on the development of local industries, and each region should harness its unique strengths and forge a path toward revitalization that aligns with its specific conditions.

Cameroon distributes disaster relief funds as deadly floods devastate Far North region

Cameroonian President Paul Biya has allocated 350 million XAF (about 591,809 U.S. dollars) for flood relief after rainstorms caused severe flooding across the country’s Far North region, a senior official said Friday.

The flooding has claimed 11 lives, destroyed 40,000 homes and displaced 180,000 people, Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji told reporters Friday in the capital, Yaounde.

“It is unfortunate that we have casualties, but we have to assist the population. We need to anticipate and put in place preventive measures in cases of flood. The vulnerable population or those impacted by the floods must receive assistance in the fastest possible way,” Nji said.

He added that within 48 hours, about 50 trucks loaded with relief materials would be dispatched to the region.

In response to mounting pressure from heavy rains, local authorities had earlier requested urgent aid for flood victims. In August, Cameroon’s meteorological center warned of continued turbulent weather, predicting that
heavy rains and strong winds would persist in the region, which has already experienced devastating downpours.
