NEW FISH SPECIES

Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of fish, Opsariichthys iridescens, in east China, which features beautiful colors.

The research findings describe how the species is distinguished from congeners by morphological features, which have been validated through gene-based phylogenetic analysis.

TECH COOPERATION

As China expands its exchange of international talent, many who have studied or worked overseas have returned to China to start their own businesses, aiming to bring a new wave of technological cooperation and innovation between China and other countries.

Leveraging the international experience and networks they have accumulated, they have established cooperative relationships with research institutions and enterprises at home and abroad to help accelerate technological innovation at the academic level, and to promote technology integration and product upgrades in terms of application.

Chinese researchers have discovered a new horned toad species, which has been named Boulenophrys pepe, in Lianshan Bijiashan Nature Reserve in south China’s Guangdong Province.

The research findings, led by Guangdong Polytechnic of Environmental Protection Engineering and other institutions, were published in a recent edition of the international academic journal Zootaxa.

Pro Palestinian demonstrators take to streets in Rome

Several thousand pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in Rome on Saturday, calling for an immediate end to fighting and a ceasefire.

Starting from morning, demonstrators convened in the Ostiense neighbourhood in southern Rome despite having no official authorization. Many were holding Palestinian and Lebanese flags and chanting slogans.

In the afternoon, clashes broke out between some protesters and police as the protesters tried to move the rally nearer to the city center and beyond the police cordon.

The protesters threw paper bombs and bottles at police officers, and police reacted with water cannon and tear gas, and eventually disbanded the crowd.

Some 30 law enforcement officers and three demonstrators were injured in the clashes, local media reported, citing sources with the Interior Ministry

Northern Laos’ Luang Prabang gears up to celebrate end of Buddhist Lent

Authorities in northern Laos’ Luang Prabang province are preparing events to welcome visitors to the annual celebration of the end of Buddhist Lent, one of the biggest and most colorful celebrations in the Southeast Asian country.

A spectacular festival takes place in the town of Luang Prabang every year to mark this significant event in the Buddhist calendar, and this year activities will be open to participants and spectators from Oct. 10 to 19, Lao national TV reported on Saturday.

During the festival, there will be almsgiving and presentation of food packets to monks and novices in the early morning and throughout the day, followed by candlelight processions in the evening.

People will light lanterns to decorate the town, and parade with and later float large dragon boats down the Mekong River. At the same time, people will float small lighted boats made of banana leaves on rivers, to let diseases and bad luck go away and good luck flow in.

Some people use this occasion to reflect on the merits of the
ir parents and the teachings of monks, and pray that they will prosper, and their lives will brighten like the candles on boats.

Luang Prabang province, some 220 km north of the national capital Vientiane, is one of the most well-known provinces in Laos and is a top tourist draw because of its riverside location, old temples, quaint streets and alleyways, colorful festivals, and scenic beauty.

Chinese troupe presents Italian opera classic in Oman

A top Chinese troupe concluded its performances of the Italian opera classic “Un Ballo in Maschera” on Saturday evening at the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman.

Produced by the National Center for the Performing Arts of China (NCPA), the opera was staged on Thursday and Saturday, drawing an audience of approximately 2,000.

Additionally, on Friday, the center hosted a special “Chinese Night” concert, offering local residents the chance to experience traditional Chinese melodies.

Wang Ning, president of the NCPA, emphasized that these performances demonstrate the organization’s commitment to promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation through opera and music.

Umberto Fanni, general manager of the Royal Opera House Muscat, highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it not only reflects the artistic collaboration between Oman and China but also acts as a bridge for unity among diverse cultures and regions through the arts.

“Un Ballo in Maschera,” or “A Masked Ball” in English, is a three-act ope
ra by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, which premiered in 1859.

Inaugurated in 2007, the NCPA is a state-level art institution situated in the heart of Beijing, featuring a distinctive shell-shaped structure. Recognized as one of the premier venues for fine art performances globally, the NCPA consistently delivers first-class productions in collaboration with renowned artists from around the world.

Huracan rout Sarmiento to keep pressure on leaders

Huracan scored two late goals to keep their title hopes alive with a 3-1 home victory over Sarmiento in Argentina’s Primera Division on Friday.

Fernando Tobio struck in the 16th minute for the hosts but Ivan Morales equalized on the half hour.

De La Fuente restored his side’s lead with a 77th-minute goal before Sarmiento’s Lucas Acosta inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the first minute of stoppage time.

The result at El Palacio leaves Huracan second in the 28-team standings with 31 points, two points behind Velez Sarsfield. Sarmiento are 23rd with 18 points from 17 games.

In Friday’s only other Primera Division fixture, Juan Meli and Manuel Palavecino scored in each half as Central Cordoba eased to a 2-0 away win over Union Santa Fe.

The result extended Central Cordoba’s winning sequence to four games in the Primera Division and five across all competitions.
