Accused convicted and suspect busted in Kanana

NORTH WEST: A 27-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday, 29 June 2021 by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Kanana for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The 9mm pistol that was found in the suspect’s possession was reportedly stolen during a house breaking a while back. The suspect will make an appearance before the Orkney Magistrates’ court on 30 June 2021.

Meanwhile in a separate incident, Malefane Petros Manama (35) was convicted for possession and disposal of unwrought precious metals by the Orkney District court on Monday, 28 June 2012. He was arrested during an operation by the Illicit Mining Group in March 2021 in Kanana when he was found in possession of unwrought gold worth approximately R25 000 and almost R400 000 in cash.

He made a series of court appearances until he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of R30 000 or three years imprisonment of which R 15 000 or 18 months is suspended for five years. He was further sentenced to and additional R 6000 fine or three months imprisonment wholly suspended for five years for contravention of the Immigration Act. Additionally, he was declared as unfit to possess a firearm.
