Accused to appear in court for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition

POTCHEFSTROOM – In a bid to curb illegal proliferation of firearms, an intelligence driven operation by members of the Anti-gang Unit and Flying Squad yielded successful results when two suspects, aged 30 and 33, were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in the early hours of Friday morning, 27 January 2023.

The suspect’s arrest came after the police acted on information received and nabbed the two suspects in a house in Kanana. They were found in possession of five shotguns, various shotgun, 9mm and R5 ammunition, blasting cartridges and shock tubes.

They are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, 30 January 2023. Investigation into the matter is underway and the police cannot rule out the possibly of linking the suspects to a murder and business robbery cases reported in November 2022.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena congratulated the team on a job done well. He pointed out that the removal of the firearms from criminals will certainly prevent the commission of serious and violent crimes and loss of innocent lives.
