Cape town: Africa's clean energy debate has reached a pivotal moment as the African Energy Week (AEW) Power Africa Today conference focuses on transforming the continent's vast clean energy potential into consistent and reliable power. Even though technologies for generating low-cost renewable energy have been established and are widely used, over 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack dependable electricity. With a record addition of 11.3 GW of renewable capacity in 2025, primarily by Ethiopia, South Africa, and Egypt, the challenge is no longer in producing clean power but in delivering it at an industrial scale with reliability.
According to African Press Organization, the Power Africa Today conference, held during African Energy Week from October 12-16 in Cape Town, aims to address these challenges. The "Capturing Africa's Clean Energy Opportunity to Close the Power Generation Gap" session will delve into the specifics of design trade-offs, system integration issues, and emerging technical solutions essential for transforming new capacity into dependable supply.
A significant focus will be shifting from merely generating energy to integrating it effectively. As the costs of solar and storage solutions decrease, the primary challenge has shifted to grid capabilities. The Africa Clean Energy Corridor highlights this imbalance, advocating for an investment of up to $25 billion annually in generation through 2030, alongside $15 billion per year needed for transmission infrastructure to ensure energy reaches consumers.
Energy storage emerges as a crucial component of this transition. Across Africa, fragile networks and unstable grids necessitate viewing battery systems as essential national infrastructure. These technologies are increasingly employed to stabilize frequency, reduce energy curtailment, and replace inefficient diesel generation. Given the challenging operating conditions, ranging from extreme temperatures to remote locations, developers are increasingly turning to fully engineered systems with automated maintenance over standalone hardware.
Decentralized energy supply, supported by both governments and private sectors, presents its own set of cost and design challenges. While mini-grid capital costs in sub-Saharan Africa decreased by approximately 20% between 2020 and 2024, averaging $6,824 per kWp, this cost remains significantly higher than the global benchmark of approximately $3,000 per kWp. With most mini-grids in the region still dependent on grants and concessional financing, the session will explore how commercial models can scale up deployment to an industrial level.
NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, underscores the importance of reliable power in every aspect of the value chain, stating, "Reliable power touches every part of the value chain. It's what turns a mining license into a smelter and a connection into a job. Getting the grids and the financing right is how we get there."
The conference is timely, given the accelerating progress in electrification efforts. The World Bank and African Development Bank's Mission 300 has connected over 50 million people across 40 countries, with about half of future connections anticipated from off-grid solutions. By bringing together policymakers, utilities, investors, and developers to focus on practical delivery mechanisms, Power Africa Today aims to transform this momentum into affordable and sustained power, driving Africa's industrial growth forward.
