Gqeberha: The Department of Agriculture is marking World Food Day (WFD) by donating food parcels and agricultural inputs to several projects and households in the Eastern Cape. This initiative aims to provide support to the community of KwaZakhele in Gqeberha as part of the WFD celebrations.
According to South African Government News Agency, Thursday’s distribution event is a collaborative effort involving the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The event seeks to raise awareness about global hunger issues and the importance of ensuring a healthy diet for everyone. The National Food and Nutrition Security Survey (NFNSS) has highlighted the Eastern Cape as one of the provinces with a significant number of food-insecure households.
The World Food Day, held under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” underscores the necessity for global cooperation and partnerships among governments, organisations, and communities to build peaceful, sustainable, and food-secure societies. As part of the day’s activities, the Masakheni Bomama Project and J. K. Zondi Primary School will receive visits, along with several households, culminating in an event at the Lilian Ngoyi Community Sports Centre.
