Johannesburg: Three alleged police killers are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) stated that the trio was apprehended on Monday night in Berea, Selby, and Eloff Extension. These arrests are linked to a murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery that took place on 8 September 2025 in Benrose.
The incident occurred when the deceased warrant officer Jabulani Mabuza’s girlfriend experienced vehicle mechanical failure on the Benrose west on-ramp. Upon calling for assistance, Mabuza arrived at the scene. As a tow truck driver arrived to assist, unknown suspects confronted them, disarmed the driver, and shot Mabuza. The suspects then pulled Mabuza from the vehicle, while the tow truck driver managed to escape and seek help at the Jeppe police station.
Mabuza and his girlfriend made their way across the freeway and were taken to Brenthurst Hospital. Unfortunately, Mabuza succumbed to his injuries.
On the night of 13 October 2025, a multi-disciplinary team, including members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operational Management Section and Serious Organised Crime Investigation, executed warrants of arrest at three addresses in Johannesburg. The operation resulted in the arrest of the three suspects and the recovery of three unlicensed firearms, ammunition, a laptop, a cellphone, and a silver grey BMW believed to have been used in the crime.
