Alleged Poacher Fatally Wounded During a Shootout with Field Rangers

Skukuza: The Police at Skukuza are investigating a shooting incident after a suspected poacher was fatally wounded by Field Rangers inside the Kruger National Park (KNP) on Friday, 21 March 2025.

According to South African Police Service, the Section Rangers of the SANPARKS at the Lower Sabie Section encountered two suspected poachers around 15:00 while on patrol duties. Upon being spotted, the suspects fled into the bushes. The Rangers initiated a pursuit and located the individuals again at approximately 18:15.

At this point, the alleged poachers reportedly opened fire on the Rangers, prompting a return of gunfire. During the exchange, one alleged poacher was shot, while the other managed to escape.

Field Rangers called for Medical Personnel and notified the Skukuza SAPS. Unfortunately, the injured individual succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could arrive. A hunting rifle equipped with two rounds of ammunition and a knife were discovered in his possession. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are part of an ongoing investigation by the Police. The deceased has yet to be identified.

This incident bears resemblance to another that reportedly took place in the Malelane area of the Kruger National Park on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, where an alleged poacher was also fatally shot. In that case, two suspected poachers were spotted by Field Rangers, leading to a shootout. One suspect disappeared while the other sustained injuries and later died. A hunting rifle and ammunition were found in his possession, and he too remains unidentified.

Both incidents continue to be subjects of investigation.
