Assault rifles confiscated in the West Coast

WESTERN CAPE – On Friday, 09 July 2021 at about 19:45, members of SAPS K9, Crime Intelligence, detectives and Crime Prevention executed a search warrant for illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition at a farm in Vredenburg .

The members found a home made rifle and pistol including 9mm pistol loaded, Upon further investigation members found a cupboard with various assault rifles being; AK47 rifle with a loaded magazine, two double barrel shotguns and a variety of homemade firearm parts.

Various rounds of ammunition for assault rifles were found as well as a variety of projectiles, cartridges and fireworks. It is alleged the suspect used the gunpowder of the fireworks to make his own firearms and ammunition. A 32-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of these firearms and is detained. The value of the find has an estimated street value of R120 000. Investigation on the farm continues.

The suspected is expected to appear in the Vredenburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 12 July 2021, on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter, on Friday, 09 July 2021, members of Maitland Flying Squad followed up information after a fire arm was stolen earlier in the week in Kraaifontein area. The members got the .45 pistol back in Athlone area and one suspect age 31-year-old, was arrested and detained at Kraaifontein SAPS on a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The suspect will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Monday 12 July 2021.
