Conagen’s Grant Award Opens New Markets for Monoclonal Antibodies

Funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for Conagen’s Conamax platform benefits developing countries and patients globally.

Bedford, Mass., March 29, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given a grant to Conagen to support further development of its Conamax(TM) platform for the production of accessible low-cost and high-quality monoclonal antibodies, benefitting developing countries and patients globally.

The high cost of monoclonal antibody (mAb) production makes blockbuster drugs expensive, limiting the markets in which these molecules can be applied and limiting access to large patient populations in developing and industrialized countries. The reason for high production costs is, in part, intrinsic to the use of mammalian cell expression systems for antibody manufacturing.

“The Conamax platform was originally conceived to address this global unmet need, so we are thrilled to have the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help develop affordable antibody therapeutics,” said Casey Lippmeier, Ph.D., vice president of innovation at Conagen.

With rapid cell growth, human-compatible glycan structures, and demonstrated world-scale fermentation bioprocesses, the Conamax platform holds several advantages over Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell lines and other mammalian expression systems, as well as other microbial platforms.

The foundation grant funds the bench-scale development of a proof-of-concept study of a continuous purification process, customized to inputs from Conamax and potentially other microbial host organisms. With large-scale advancements, Conagen envisions that this process will be capable of continuously purifying mAbs from material generated in bioreactors with volumes greater than 250,000 liters.

As a significant advantage, the process will not require expensive binding proteins or other expensive column purification steps. This process will enable economies of scale which are not accessible to CHO or other mammalian-derived cell systems while also providing rapid, high-throughput purification of large amounts of antibody.

“Incumbent antibody manufacturing and purification processes based on Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell lines have brought tremendous advancements to biopharmaceuticals,” said Lippmeier. “However, CHO cell systems are comparatively low volume, expensive, and do not enable low cost and efficient purification of large amounts of antibodies.”

According to McKinsey, in 2019, global sales revenue for all mAb drugs was nearly $163 billion, representing about 70% of the total sales for all biopharmaceutical products, approximately $230 billion. That is about a 50% growth in sales and proportion since 2013, when it was $75 billion.

Continued growth in sales of currently approved mAb products, along with more than 1,200 mAb product candidates currently in development — many for multiple indications — will continue to drive the overall sales of all biopharmaceutical products.

“We’re unlocking the way to make drugs more affordable and, while doing so, opening additional markets for biologics,” said Lippmeier.

Minister Barbara Creecy on updated annual list of tree species in South Africa

Four tree species have been added to the list of Protected Trees in South Africa

The updated annual list of all tree species which are protected in terms of the National Forests Act was published by the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy, in Government Gazette 46094 (Notice No. 1935) on 25 March 2022.

The four species added to the list are the Red and Pink Ivory (Berchemia zeyheri), the Jackal Berry (Diospyros mespiliformis), Manketti (Schinziophyton rautanenii) and the Umtiza (Umtiza listeriana).

The consequence of declaring a tree, species of trees or a particular group of trees, or a particular woodland as protected in terms of the National Forests Act, means that no person may:

Cut, disturb, damage or destroy any protected tree, or

Possess, collect, remove, transport, export, purchase, sell, donate or in any other manner acquire or dispose of any protected tree, or any forest product derived from a protected tree,

Except –

Under a licence granted by the Minister, or

In terms of an exemption from the provisions if approved by the Minister on the advice of the Council

A person who contravenes the prohibitions is considered to have committed a first category offence, and may be convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment, or imprisonment and a fine to be determined by the court.

MEC Anton Bredell on South Africa’s commitment to environmental challenges

Minister Bredell concerned about South Africa’s commitment to environmental challenges

Anton Bredell, Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning today warned that government initiatives and actions are too slow to address the double challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization in South Africa.

Bredell said that even though South Africa received financial commitments of R130billion at COP26 at the end of 2021 to assist with a transition away from coal powered electricity generation, there is currently no clarity on what the National Government is planning to do. “There has been no official communication via the Climate Change Working Group on this important opportunity for us. I am concerned that our National Government is moving too slow and in an uncoordinated manner.”

Bredell said this is frustrating, as COP26 stated very clearly that human actions are causing environmental damages, and our carbon-based economies are contributing to climate change. Another report, the 2022 Global Risk Report, published by the World Economic Forum, stated that our inability to address environmental issues, is the number one risk for humanity over the next decade.

Bredell said the state of the environment described by the international reports are reflected in work done by the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

“Our latest update of The State of Environment Outlook Report 2018 makes for sobering reading. It shows that the pressures on our natural systems are unsustainable. More needs to be done to protect critically sensitive or important environmental features, without which the ability of the Western Cape to adapt to impacts from increasing population and climate change is uncertain,” Bredell said.

Bredell said important work done by the Department which focus on water catchment programmes will continue in the Berg and Breede River catchments through the Berg River Improvement Plan and the Breede River Environmental Resource Protection Plan.

A total of 29 Estuaries Management Plans has also been made available to the public for comment earlier this year, and the Department, together with CapeNature, are now in a review process after which the Plans will be finalisation and approved.

These plans set out to co-ordinate and manage the various activities and impacts that occur within the estuarine functional zone. In some instances, this could ultimately lead to declaring an estuary as a protected area or special management area. Such as been the case with the Berg River Estuary, which was recently declared a Ramsar Site under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

The 3rd iteration of the Western Cape Air Quality Management Plan (2021 – 2025) released this year, focus on air quality, air pollution and climate change. An investment of R10million over the past 2 years to upgrade 12 atmospheric monitoring stations allows the Department to support Western Cape municipalities to know in real time what the status of their air quality is, and to assist them in drafting their individual Air Quality Plans.

“These projects all work towards our long-term plans for a greener and sustainable environment, whilst contributing to the implementation of the Western Cape Climate Change Strategy: Vision 2050, which is currently being developed,” Bredell said.
