Water and Sanitation fast-tracks completion of Hazelmere Dam

Department of Water and Sanitation in KwaZulu-Natal fast-tracks the completion of the raising of the Hazelmere Dam wall

The Department of Water and Sanitation in KwaZulu-Natal has reiterated its commitment to complete bulk water projects in the province following the National Water and Sanitation Summit last month which was aimed at finding long-lasting solutions in the sector, one being the effective implementation of water infrastructure projects.

As such, the Department’s Provincial Head Ashley Starkey alongside Umgeni Water Board Acting Chief Executive Mboniseni Dlamini led a media tour to the Hazelmere Dam on the North Coast on Thursday, 17 March 2022 to provide a firsthand account of work being carried out to raise the dam wall by 7m to increase its storage capacity.

Starkey said the project is of importance as it addresses the urgent need to augment water supply to the North Coast, which will in turn benefit areas such as Verulam, Groutville, Blythedale and Ballito.

“Since commencement of construction at the Dam, 110 employment opportunities have been created for skilled and semi-skilled locals in the area. This is proof to show that not only are we working towards securing water in the province, but also providing the necessary skills and opportunities for unemployed people,” he said.

Also speaking during the media tour at the Dam, Acting Chief Executive Dlamini emphasised the collaborative ways in which the water utility together with the Department and the contractor were working closely to effectively complete the project by December 2022.

“Umgeni Water is the current operator on the dam and carries out daily monitoring of the water level amongst other things. When we met with Minister Senzo Mchunu a few months ago, we had already agreed amongst ourselves that only working collaboratively, will we be able to fast-track and complete this project,” he said.

“So, when the Minster implored us to sort out our differences and work together, it was only fitting that we continued to work with vigour and more closely together,” Dlamini added.

The raising of the Hazelmere Dam wall from 85.98m to 93.00m through the construction of the Piano Key Weir will increase the dam’s storage capacity from 23.9 million cubic metres to 43.6 million cubic metres.

The Department has also called on locals to report infrastructure vandalism to local authorities.

Employment and Labour engages farm workers and farmers in Ventersdorp as part of interventions on non compliance in farming sector

In its attempt to intervene in noncompliance in the farming sector, the Department of Employment and Labour in the North West held two separate engagements with farm workers and farmers.

The main purpose for these engagements were to empower employees on their rights in the workplace and also to educate them about other benefits they are entitled to; while for the farmers, the session was aimed at educating them about their obligations towards their employees as per the labour laws dictates.

According to the Provincial Chief Inspector (PCI) in the North West, Boikie Mampuru, most of the farmers get away with lots of mistakes just because employees do not know as to what they are entitled to and that it was therefore important that the Department advocate these laws to avoid situations whereby employers cite lack of knowledge as their excuse for noncompliance.

“The farming sector is one of those that mistreat employees, especially as it is dominated by those that come from disadvantaged backgrounds, therefore it is our responsibility as the Department to ensure that their rights are not infringed upon hence we met with them to ensure we empower them. With employers we also want to educate them on their obligations so that when we crack the whip, they do not turn around claiming we enforce laws that we never advocate,” Mampuru said.

The Department in the province is planning to conduct mega blitz inspection in the first month of the next financial year and the farming sector is one of those that will be inspected and the PCI hopes for fewer transgressions given their constant engagements with the farming sector.

These engagements were focusing on all key services that the Department administers, namely the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), Compensation Fund (CF), Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) and Public Employment Services which focused mainly on work visas applications and procedures to be followed.

South African Post Office issues limited edition stamps celebrating Freedom Day

Stamp of approval for democracy

South Africa celebrates Freedom Day on Monday 21 March 2022, and the SA Post Office is one of the unsung heroes of democracy in South Africa.

The SA Post Office works closely with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to verify the addresses of voters in informal and rural settlements, where formal street names and numbers do not exist. In this way the Post Office helps to ensure that all eligible South African have the right to vote, which is one of the most basic democratic rights.

During the past financial year the SA Post Office issued 637000 new addresses, mainly to new dwellings in informal and rural areas. Without a formal address, it is impossible to vote, open a bank account, or call out an emergency vehicle with clear directions about where the emergency is.

The SA Post Office has issued several limited edition stamps over time to celebrate Freedom Day and the events that led to it, such as the Freedom Charter, heroes of the freedom struggle and more. These stamps are sold out and have now become collectors’ items.

The Post Office brings several other government services to the people. The Post Office-Postbank partnership facilitates the payment of around 8 million SASSA grants per month. The Post Office was initially the sole agency for the payment of the R350 SRD grant; since then, Pick ‘n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers and USave supermarkets have partner-shipped with the SA Post Office providing beneficiaries additional sites to collect their R350 grant.

South Africa will soon switch from analogue to digital television transmission. All indigent households had – and still have – the opportunity to register for a subsidised decoder at their local post office, and in fact teams of Post Office employees took to the streets to encourage households to register.

Patients who receive chronic medication from a government clinic can opt to collect it from a convenient post office in areas where there is a demand for it. During the last financial year around 3 million motor vehicle licences were renewed at Post Office outlets, and the SA Post Office recently launched a website where vehicle owners can renew their car licences online.

The Post Office plans to extend its relationship with government further, so that it can make more government services accessible to the people.

President Cyril Ramaphosa requests Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane for reasons not to suspend her

President Cyril Ramaphosa has asked Public Protector Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane to provide him with reasons why he should not suspend her in terms of Section 194(3)(a) of the Constitution.

This follows confirmation from the Speaker of the National Assembly that the Section 194 Committee has resolved to continue with its consideration of the motion for the removal of the Public Protector.

In a letter to the Public Protector dated 17 March 2022, President Ramaphosa says that in light of the resolution of the Committee:

“It would therefore now be appropriate to consider whether or not you ought to be suspended pending finalisation of the Committee’s work.
