Man arrested for bribery and possession of suspected stolen property

DURBAN – Yesterday morning at 10:00, members of various units from Ladysmith were performing policing duties at the Tugela Toll Plaza when they pulled over a minibus taxi with fifteen passengers.

Upon searching the passenger’s luggage, police officers found a black bag containing four laptops and a silver bag containing one laptop. All the laptops were wrapped in clear plastic. On initial investigation it was discovered that both the bags belonged to a Malawian national. Upon questioning him he could not produce any paperwork or documents to verify ownership of the said laptops.

The man then called two of the police officers to the side and offered them one thousand in cash to let him go. The police officers seized the money and immediately arrested him. The suspects was taken to Besters police station where he was charged for possession of suspected stolen property and bribery.

The laptops and money were handed in at the police station as exhibits. The suspect will appear in Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Crurated Partners With More than 50 World Renowned European Winemakers to Raise Funds for Ukraine Relief Efforts

Coveted producers including Louis Roederer Cristal, Domaine Meo-Camuzet, and Domaine Dujac offer up lots of wine for auction with the initial pre-auction value at $100,000

Each bottle sold includes access to an exclusive NFT that verifies authenticity, ownership history, vintage, vineyard location, varietal, and more

LONDON, March 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The world’s top wine producers are responding to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine in an innovative way. Crurated, the London-based membership wine community designed to connect connoisseurs with world-class producers, has announced it is dedicating the week of March 14-20, 2022 for The All Heart Auction, an online event auctioning rare wines from world renowned producers to support humanitarian needs of the Ukrainian people. Selected producers donating wines for the auction include Louis Roederer Cristal, Domaine Meo-Camuzet, and Domaine Dujac among many others. The initial value of the more than 250 bottles of wine pre-auction totals $100,000. A full list of all producers participating is below.

Members and non-members alike are encouraged to participate and bid. Interested bidders are invited to register for an account at www.crurated.com. Non-members can sign-up for a free Explorer membership, allowing anyone to submit bids on the Crurated platform and participate in the fundraising event.

100% of the funds raised from the auction will be distributed to Red Cross, Save The Children, UNHCR, and UNICEF.

The team from Crurated has also developed a unique platform that offers clients an accompanying NFT with each purchase. Recorded forever on the blockchain, the NFT verifies authenticity of the bottle and provides other important details including ownership history, vintage, vineyard location, varietal, and other key details. The NFTs are easily accessible by tapping on an NFC or RFID enabled phone. The bottle history is also updated via a new blockchain recording anytime the wine is resold and the token moves from one client to another. The company uses Polygon technology for NFTs and blockchain.

“It has been amazing watching the world unite to help the people of Ukraine. Our auction initiative represents how I feel about wine and its ability to offer such a generous gift to the world,” said Alfonso de Gaetano, Founder of Crurated. “Our platform is also perfectly suited for this initiative because we automatically assign an NFT for every bottle that is brought into our warehouse and loaded onto the platform. We are anticipating an exciting auction with generous donors pitching in to help lessen the humanitarian crisis.”

“We have had a special link to Ukraine for more than 20 years and have sponsored a charitable event to help young dancers and their families in Lviv. We’ve also raised funds for the Lviv pediatric hospital,” said Jean-Nicolas & Nathalie Méo, of Meo-Camuzet. “Some of the children we had at home for summer vacation are probably old enough to be fighting now, and we dread the thought of their involvement in this war. We hope that the very special wines we have donated for the auction will receive an appropriate welcome and help support the needs of the Ukrainian civilians.”

Other world-class winemakers participating in the auction include: Larmandier-Bernier, Pascal Agrapart, Pierre Péters, Suenen, Bérêche & Fils, Doyard, Moussé Fils, Salon, Vilmart & Cie, Billecart-Salmon, Geoffroy, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Caroline Colin-Morey, Robert Groffier, Père & Fils, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Caroline Colin-Morey, Robert Groffier Père & Fils, Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, Arnaud Baillot, Duroché, Fourrier, Denis Mortet, Dujac, Chateau Pavie, Tenuta Sette Ponti, Ceretto, Massolino, Poderi Aldo Conterno, Grattamacco, Casanova di Neri, Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, Bartolo Mascarello, Biondi Santi, Argiano, Mascarello Giuseppe e Figlio, Il Marroneto, Giacomo Conterno, Montevertine, Tenuta di Trinoro, Elio Altare, Fontanafredda, Borgogno, and Roberto Voerzio.

Overview of the Eastern Cape crime situation for the 3rd Quarter of 2021/2022

MTHATHA – “What has been presented…is a mixed bag of successes and shortcomings,” that is how the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety captured the Crime Situation for the 3rd Quarter of 2021/2022 (October to December 2021) in her main address during a briefing session that was held in Mthatha yesterday.

The Eastern Cape MEC For Transport and Community Safety, Mrs Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe and Police Senior Management in the Province of the Eastern Cape held a briefing session on reported crimes between October and December 2021.

“Provincial Commissioner, this is what the numbers read. We have to accept them and accept the challenge they pose to us. We as the Department of Community Safety are here to say. You are not alone in this journey”, concluded MEC Tikana-Gxothiwe

The province has shown a decrease of 7.4% on reported rape cases, with Lusikisiki still showing some challenges as it reported most cases of rape in the province.

Successful cross border operations to curb stock theft yielded positive results, as there was a decrease of 11.7% in the said period.

Crimes against women and children will always be the priority of government. The SAPS will intensify its proactive and combat operations so as to curb gender based violence and incidents of domestic violence. SAPS will also partner with other pertinent stakeholders to assist in addressing social ills

There were some notable decreases in criminal activities in the Province:

– 3.6% on property related crimes

– 9.3% on truck hijacking

In categories of crime, where there was an increase, strategic approaches and deployments will be introduced systematically and simultaneously monitored so as to gauge their effectiveness.

“Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mene asserted, “We need to appreciate the good performance in some areas and crime categories where we have witnessed significant decreases in specific and most problematic crimes. It is well known fact that in the previous years and quarters we were concerned about such crimes as Stock Theft and Rapes in identified hotspots. It was exciting for me to see some measure of decreases in GBV cases in the area of Lusikisiki and some parts of the Province. However, I am not suggesting that we have arrived.”

Community members advised to call 10111 due to several Cape Town police station telephone lines down

Telephone lines to a number of police stations in the Cape Town metropole are currently down. Technicians are currently hard at work trying to determine the cause with a view to fixing the problem.

As a contingency plan, community members are advised to call the 10111 line that will in turn connect them to their respective police stations utilising other means of communication.

The management of SAPS in the Western Cape apologises for the inconvenience that may arise from this unforeseen situation.

While the relevant experts determine the source of this technical failure, the deployment of police officials in terms of the crime threat analysis will not be hampered as other means of communication remain in place.

Further communication on the issue will follow in due course as the situation is monitored constantly.

COVID-19: SA not yet out of the woods

President Cyril Ramaphosa has encouraged South Africans to go out in their numbers and get their booster COVID-19 shots as the country has not yet defeated the pandemic.

He said the COVID-19 virus is still very much with us and therefore everyone should get vaccinated as well have their booster shots.

“If you have already been vaccinated go and get your booster shot. I am getting my booster shot here in Mahikeng. I want to encourage all of us to vaccinate and ensure that we are all vaccinated.

“Other nations are imposing further lockdowns because there has suddenly been a flare up. We are not yet out of the woods, COVID-19 is still here, therefore it is important that we should be protected through vaccination,” President Ramaphosa said.

Leading by example, the jovial President Ramaphosa received his Pfizer booster shot administered to him by healthcare workers in Mahikeng where he was conducting a Presidential Imbizo.

Meanwhile, he said the National Coronavirus Command Council was considering extending the National State of Disaster beyond 15 March 2022.

The National State of Disaster was declared by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 imposing regulations controlling and managing the movement of people, gatherings, curfews and mask wearing among others.

Speaking to media after concluding his Imbizo, the President said while he wanted the National State of Disaster to come to an end, they were still looking at what health measures can be put in place to enable government to continue managing the pandemic.

“We are finding the best way possible of bringing a logical conclusion to the state of disaster,” the President said.
