Information sought to locate a missing woman

LEVUBU- The South African Police Service in Levubu outside Thohoyandou seek information that can assist to find a missing woman aged 27, Shonisani Munyai from Ha Mashau Doli who went missing on Saturday 05 June 2021 in the morning.

She allegedly informed her brother that she is going to Thohoyandou and never came back. She was wearing a yellow jersey, black jeans and she was carrying a black handbag.

Police search operation was conducted at relatives and surrounding areas with no success.

Police recover firearm used in multiple crime scenes in Muizenberg as they guard two suspects in hospital after arrest

Two suspects are under police guard in hospital after committing several crimes in Muizenberg on Friday.

Police reports indicate that the two armed suspects broke into a home in Moselle Road in Muizenberg’s Friday morning, took several items and tied the owner (82-year-old woman) up with cable ties and fled the scene.

Several metres from the first scene the fleeing suspects robbed another person of a cellular telephone. Once the suspects got to the Main Road, St James they attempted to hijack a vehicle driven by a woman. When members of the public intervened they turned their attention to another vehicle whose driver also tried to assist the driver of the first vehicle. A third vehicle rammed into the second vehicle knocking one suspect down. He sustained serious injury after being hit by the third vehicle that rammed into the door of the second vehicle that was being hijacked. At the time, other suspect fled from the scene dropping a firearm in a nearby bush.

Muizenberg police rushing to the scene saw a man fitting the description of one of the suspects and chased him. He was subsequently apprehended.

Inside the second vehicle the suspects attempted to hijack, police found several items stolen from the home in Moselle Road. They included jewellery, money in foreign currency, a cellular telephone and firearm.

As part of ongoing investigations into the different crime scenes, police embarked on a search for the firearm that was allegedly thrown into a nearby bush by the second suspect who fled the scene. At 15:45 on Friday afternoon they recovered the firearm.

The assistance of members of the public in aiding the crime victims and police in apprehending the suspects is commended.

The suspects (one in his early 20s and the other in his 30s) who face house robbery, pointing with a firearm, armed robbery and possession of firearm and ammunition charges will appear in court once they are released from hospital. Police have also ascertained that the suspects have links to gangs. As the investigations unfold, the possibility of the suspects linked to other crimes cannot be ruled out.

Eastern Cape SAPS laid to rest Sergeant Nyameko Mbelani

CENTANE – The District Commissioner Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu and his senior management were paid of the mourners who went to pay their last respect to Sergeant Mbelani who was laid to rest today at Centane. He was fatally shot in the line of duty at Dutywa beginning of the month.

Mr Mbelani from the family described Nyameko as a disciplined person who loved his family, his job and a family man. It is unfortunate that he is living behind his parents, wife and kids

The Station Commander of Dutywa SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Mphetshethwa characterised Sergeant Mbelani as a go-getter who always ensured that the community of Dutywa is safe and secured. “The Dutywa community, together with SAPS family has lost a disciplined and humble police official.”

The District Commissioner Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu appreciated the family in assisting Sergeant Mbelani when he joined the men and women in blue (SAPS) in the fight against crime.

Sergeant Mbelani has 16 years of loyal service meaning he was dedicated to fighting crime in our country.

The SAPS Chaplain Warrant Officer (Rev) Ngcephe comforted the family and reminded them that in everything they must trust in God.

Mr Mbelani thanked the SAPS for being there from the day Nyameko was shot up until today. Your efforts, love and kindness didn’t go unnoticed, he added.

Brooklyn police station temporarily closed due to Covid- 19 related incident

All communities serviced by the Brooklyn police station are advised that the police station has been temporarily closed for decontamination after one of its members tested positive for Covid- 19.

The Community Service Centre will be operating from the boardroom at the Firearm Centre, next to the main building.

The telephone lines at Brooklyn police station Community Service Centre can be accessed by phoning (012) 366 1827 for the duration of closure.

The building will be undergoing decontamination and the Community will be informed when the station will be operational again.

The SAPS Management apologises for any inconvenience that may arise from this.

A male suspect arrested in East London

A 37-year-old male suspect was arrested after he was found with ten live sheep.

At approximately 04:30 East London Crime Centre members was patrolling in Quigney when they spotted a suspicious vehicle parked outside the hotel in Quigney. As the van stopped two male suspects jumped out of the vehicle.

The members gave chase and called for backup. East London Crime Prevention members responded and the crime Centre members managed to arrest a 37-year-old male suspect.

Upon searching the vehicle the members found five sheep on the back seat of the vehicle and five in the boot.

The suspect was arrested and will be detained for Possession of suspected stolen stock.

The vehicle that was utilised to commit crime was taken to camp 13 for further investigation. Stock theft unit has been summoned to the scene and the suspect will appear in the East London Magistrate court on 2021-06-14.

Accused appears in court for possession of illicit cigarettes

POTCHEFSTROOM – In a bid to curb transnational crime, police at Kopfontein Port of Entry arrested a 53-year old Petrus Toppies for possession of illicit cigarettes.

Members were busy with their daily duties on Tuesday, 08 June 2021 at about 17:00, when they pulled off a MAN truck to the search area. The truck which was pulling a trailer, was entering South Africa from Zambia via Botswana. Moreover, the driver who was alone in the truck, declared that he was transporting liquid molasses for cows.

Upon further investigation by the customs officials, the driver reportedly disclosed that the middle compartment of the trailer contained illicit cigarettes. The resultant search revealed that the trailer’s flank compartments contained liquid molasses while the middle one was filled with 355 Master Cases of Pacific Blue Cigarettes to the estimated value of R4 805 200.00.

The driver was immediately arrested and liquid molasses had to be drained out as it is not suitable for use in South Africa. The truck and cigarettes were ultimately confiscated.

Meanwhile, Toppies appeared before the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 11 June 2021. He was remanded in custody until Friday, 18 June 2021, for a formal bail application.

The case is investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Dintletse Molefe lauded members and Customs officials for their vigilance and cooperation that resulted in the arrest. She pointed out that illicit cigarettes trade affects the economy of the country and the police will deal harshly with those who perpetrate the crime.
