Authorities Monitor N3 Amid Snowfall in Drakensberg Mountains

Kwazulu-natal: KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has announced that authorities are closely monitoring the road network as the Drakensberg Mountains experience snowfall. Grader operators have been placed on standby to ensure that snow accumulation does not exceed 30cm, which could potentially disrupt travel.

According to South African Government News Agency, Van Reenen, the stretch between Harrismith and Ladysmith, is under close observation to facilitate road closures if necessary. This measure aims to prevent motorists from becoming stranded on the N3. Coastal and low-lying areas, particularly those with informal settlements, are also being watched carefully.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for disruptive rain and snow. The anticipated rain could lead to flooding of bridges, roads, and settlements, causing damage to property and infrastructure along the coast and adjacent interior between East London in the Eastern Cape and Cape Vidal in KwaZulu-Natal. The disruptive snow forecasted for the north-eastern high ground of the Eastern Cape and the Drakensberg area could lead to traffic disruptions, interruption of essential services, and temporary isolation of some communities.

In preparation for the expected adverse weather conditions, the Human Settlements team, in collaboration with eThekwini Municipality Human Settlements and Infrastructure, has secured over 170 rooms at the newly acquired Montclair Lodge. These accommodations are designated for families who may be displaced by the floods. Additionally, construction is underway at the Quarry Heights Bridge, which was partially damaged by floods in 2022. To prevent soil erosion and restore sidewalks, gabions are being installed by eThekwini Municipality.

Engineers from the Department of Transport have taken preventive measures by installing culverts in some bridges to mitigate road flooding, which typically occurs when water pools on the road surface.
