Lenasia: The bail hearing for seven officials from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and three accomplices, all facing fraud charges, has been postponed to 1 April 2025. The accused appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court, charged with over 1,000 fraud-related offenses.
According to South African Government News Agency, four of the accused were arrested last month, while another four were detained on Friday. Two additional suspects surrendered themselves on Sunday and Monday. Themba Matlou, SASSA Acting Chief Executive Officer, expressed approval of the arrests and reiterated the agency’s dedication to eliminating fraud and corruption within its operations.
Matlou highlighted the collaborative efforts of SASSA officials and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in addressing fraudulent activities. He called on the public to report any suspicious behavior related to social grants, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in combating these issues.
SASSA has encouraged the public to join the fight against grant fraud and corruption by reporting incidents to 0800 60 10 11 or the National Anti-Corruption Hotline at 0800 701 701.
