BMA Halts Operations at Oshoek Port of Entry After Truck Accident

Oshoek: The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr. Michael Masiapato, and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) have temporarily suspended operations at the Oshoek Port of Entry with Eswatini. This decision follows a serious truck accident on Sunday.

According to South African Government News Agency, the incident took place at approximately 10:20 when a truck, allegedly suffering from brake failure, descended towards Eswatini on the departure side of the port. The truck collided with 10 stationary private vehicles, four SARS vehicles, and one SANDF bakkie, causing extensive damage.

Three individuals, including one SARS official, one tourism monitor, and the truck driver, sustained injuries in the crash. They were promptly attended to by Eswatini Emergency Medical Services and transported to a hospital in Eswatini for immediate medical attention. The port’s infrastructure suffered significant damage, including two guardhouses and an inspection shelter.

Dr. Masiapato stated, “As a precautionary measure, all operations at Oshoek Port of Entry have been temporarily suspended to allow for investigations by SAPS and collection of evidence and photographs from the scene.” He further mentioned that pending safety assessments by disaster management teams, operations at the port would remain suspended until clearance is given to ensure safety for all stakeholders.

Travelers and cargo transporters are advised to use alternative Ports of Entry with Eswatini, such as the Nerston Port of Entry, Mahamba Port of Entry, Jeppes Reef Port of Entry, and the Lebombo Port of Entry with Mozambique.

The BMA, along with SARS and other stakeholders, have expressed wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured and are working diligently to resume services. They also extended their gratitude to the Eswatini Emergency Medical Services for their swift response and to all stakeholders for their cooperation during this challenging time.
