Boca Juniors eyes Gago for manager’s job

Former Real Madrid and Argentina international midfielder Fernando Gago is the leading candidate for the vacant managerial position at Boca Juniors, according to widespread media reports.

Gago, who is currently in charge of Mexico’s Guadalajara, has held informal talks with Boca officials this week, Argentine news outlet Ole reported on Wednesday.

It added that Guadalajara was reluctant to release the 38-year-old before the end of the current Liga MX season in December.

Boca has been searching for a manager since the resignation of Diego Martinez last Saturday.

It is understood that other candidates for the role include Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Luis Zubeldia and Rodolfo Arrubarrena.

The Buenos Aires giants are currently 13th in Argentina’s 28-team Primera Division standings with 21 points from 16 games.
