Brazil to Join South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel

Brasilia: Brazil will request to intervene in South Africa's genocide case against Israel's actions in Gaza at the International Court of Justice, a source familiar with the matter said. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced that the country is in the "final stages" of submitting a formal intervention in South Africa's case against Israel.

According to TRTworld.com, South Africa filed a case in 2023 asking the ICJ to declare that Israel was in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention due to its actions in Gaza. The situation in Gaza has been dire, with reports indicating that approximately 11,000 Palestinians are feared buried under the rubble of destroyed homes, as per Palestine's official WAFA news agency.

Experts have suggested that the actual death toll could be significantly higher than reported, estimating it might reach around 200,000. Throughout the conflict, Israel has been accused of reducing much of the blockaded enclave to ruins and displacing nearly the entire population. Additionally, Israel has restricted the entry of critical humanitarian aid, permitting only a controversial US-backed aid group to operate, which has been criticized as a "death trap."

South Africa's legal action and Brazil's subsequent involvement underscore the escalating international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The case at the ICJ could have significant implications for international law and the responsibilities of nations under the Genocide Convention.
