Gqeberha: A suspect implicated in the murder of a female prosecutor in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape is due to appear in court on Monday. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has condemned the killing of the 42-year-old prosecutor, who was allegedly assassinated by four armed men on July 31, 2025, in Gqeberha.
According to South African Government News Agency, a multidisciplinary investigation team led by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) of the Hawks, in collaboration with various SAPS units, immediately launched efforts to trace those responsible. The attack occurred in front of the prosecutor's home and was witnessed by her partner.
The investigation linked a 33-year-old suspect to the incident. While pursuing leads in Johannesburg, investigators received information indicating the suspect was traveling back to Gqeberha. It was revealed that the suspect fled to Johannesburg shortly after the incident in an attempt to evade justice. The team strategically coordinated a roadblock in the early hours of August 22, 2025, successfully intercepting the suspect's vehicle and apprehending him.
The suspect is currently in custody and is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court on Monday, August 25, 2025. Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, the provincial Head of the Hawks, stated that the arrest is a significant step forward and emphasized that the Hawks will not allow criminals to intimidate the justice system.
