BRICS Urged to Lead Global Governance Reform

Rio de janeiro: President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva has challenged BRICS nations to take the lead in reshaping international governance to reflect the world’s new multipolar reality. Addressing the Peace, Security and Global Governance Session in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, President Lula warned about the collapse of multilateralism and the risk to the advancements made in climate and trade regimes.

According to South African Government News Agency, President Lula highlighted the historical significance of the United Nations, which recently marked its 80th anniversary, as a symbol of the defeat of Nazi-Fascism and a beacon of collective hope. He positioned BRICS as a successor to the Non-Aligned Movement, emphasizing the current challenges to multilateralism and the autonomy of nations.

Amid ongoing global challenges, President Lula criticized the current state of the global health system, noting the persistent barriers posed by intellectual property demands that limit access to essential medication. He pointed out the disparity in global priorities, highlighting the ease with which military spending is prioritized over crucial development assistance.

President Lula also addressed concerns about the instrumentalisation of key international institutions, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. He warned that such actions could undermine the credibility of these organizations, which play a vital role in maintaining global peace.

Condemning acts of terrorism and violence, President Lula called attention to the attacks by Hamas, the situation in Kashmir, and the actions of Israel in Gaza. He stressed the importance of resolving conflicts through the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian State within the 1967 borders and the end of the Israeli occupation.

The Brazilian government has consistently denounced violations of territorial integrity, as seen in its stance on Iran and Ukraine. President Lula urged the parties involved in the Ukraine conflict to engage in direct dialogue to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace. He highlighted the role of the “Friends for Peace” group, formed by China and Brazil, in seeking solutions to end hostilities.
