Jakarta:KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has joined forces with traditional leaders to urge men to actively oppose gender-based violence and femicide, emphasizing the protection of women and children.
According to South African Government News Agency, Buthelezi participated alongside Amakhosi, Izinduna, Amabutho, and women in a campaign organized by the Provincial House of Traditional and Khoisan leaders in the Swayimane area under the Gcumisa Traditional Authority. The campaign aimed to highlight the severe impact of gender-based violence and femicide, encouraging men to take responsibility for preventing such violence.
The campaign called on men to reclaim their roles as protectors and safety ambassadors, urging communities to speak out against abuse and support efforts to bring perpetrators to justice. Traditional leaders emphasized the need for men to be proactive in creating safer communities.
Buthelezi praised the initiative, stating that the involvement of traditional leaders is crucial in spreading the message against gender-based violence across the province. He acknowledged the leadership of Amakhosi in organizing the campaign, which seeks to instill a sense of responsibility among men and prioritizes the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
He also expressed the department's support for the initiative, noting that it amplifies the collective voice against gender-based violence and encourages active involvement from all community members, including Izinduna. Buthelezi advocated for similar campaigns to be launched throughout the province to enhance community participation in combating violence.
Additionally, he urged communities to work with law enforcement agencies, report abuse cases, and support efforts to hold perpetrators accountable.
