Cabinet Approves Specific Focus Areas for Operation Vulindlela

Pretoria: Cabinet has approved the focus areas of Operation Vulindlela, a joint initiative of the Presidency and National Treasury designed to drive structural reforms. Operation Vulindlela aims to stabilize electricity supply, create a competitive and efficient freight logistics system, reduce the cost and improve the quality of digital communication, ensure a stable, quality water supply, and reform the visa regime to facilitate skilled immigration and support tourism.

According to South African Government News Agency, Minister in The Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, addressing a media briefing in Pretoria, stated that the focus areas include completing outstanding work in Phase 1, specifically in the areas of energy, water, visa, and logistics reforms. Additionally, the new focus areas will target local government, spatial inequality, and digital transformation.

The Cabinet has directed Operation Vulindlela, in consultation with relevant line departments, to consider additional reform focus areas. These areas include re-industrialization and localization to unlock infrastructure development, and the oil and gas sector exploration. Notably, South Africa is recognized as the 8th country with the largest gas reserves, and the approaching gas cliff necessitates the country to develop self-provisioning capacity in gas.

Cabinet is expected to convene a special meeting within the next four weeks to concentrate on an Economic Growth Plan.
