Cabinet Urges Immediate Action Against Femicide Perpetrators

Ekurhuleni:Pretoria: Cabinet has urged law enforcement agencies to quickly arrest and prosecute those responsible for the killings of women in Ekurhuleni and nearby areas.

According to South African Government News Agency, the call follows an alarming increase in the number of murdered women, with 13 bodies discovered since July 2026. This includes a woman found at Mooifontein Cemetery in Tembisa on September 26, 2026, and another 23-year-old woman reportedly shot during an alleged robbery in Thembisa on September 28, 2020.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stated that perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide must face severe legal consequences. She emphasized Cabinet's support for President Cyril Ramaphosa's directive to the multidisciplinary team led by the South African Police Service to expedite investigations and ensure justice for the victims.

The President will address the nation on measures to combat gender-based violence and femicide. Meanwhile, several people of interest are being pursued by the investigation team, and four suspects remain in custody after being denied bail.

Cabinet expressed significant concern over the rising gender-based violence incidents, particularly femicide€š¬…¡¬‚¬Å¡¬defined as the intentional killing of women by intimate partners or acquaintances. Ntshavheni stressed the need for a collective societal response to protect women, urging men, families, and communities to take a stand against such violence.

She highlighted the importance of swift action by law enforcement and noted recent legal amendments allowing for harsher measures against gender-based violence, including denying bail to suspects. Ntshavheni reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing the safety and well-being of women and children.

The Minister also acknowledged the role of the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre hotline in providing assistance and underscored the importance of reporting abuse to access available support services.
