Pretoria: Cabinet has welcomed this week’s launch of the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum (BMIACF). Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni announced on Thursday that the forum, launched on 25 March 2025, is a significant part of the government’s efforts to tackle corruption within border management and immigration sectors.
According to South African Government News Agency, Minister Ntshavheni briefed the media following a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. At the launch event, Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber issued a stern warning to corrupt officials, emphasizing that the department will exhaust all measures to eliminate corruption within its ranks. Schreiber highlighted that collaboration among relevant authorities is showing positive results in restoring the integrity of the Department of Home Affairs and the Border Management Authority (BMA).
Dr. Schreiber also addressed the need for systems reform to eliminate the discretionary powers that often lead to fraud and corruption. He expressed a strong commitment to implementing reforms that would ensure such opportunities for corruption are minimized.
In addition to the launch of the BMIACF, Cabinet expressed approval of the recent success of Operation Shanela. Between 17 and 23 March 2025, the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested 12,892 suspects. Among those arrested were 1,753 wanted for serious and violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, and robberies.
Furthermore, 1,794 suspects were taken into custody for assault with Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), and 203 arrests were made related to drug dealing. This operation underscores the ongoing commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat crime and maintain public safety.
