Cash in transit robbery accused remanded in custody


Jabulani Nxele (51) briefly appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates court for armed robbery that happened on Church street in Pietermaritzburg, on 12 December 2022.

It is alleged that security guards from the collecting company were collecting cash in one of the shops on Church street in Pietermaritzburg. Whilst the security guard was walking towards the cash van, he was accosted by four suspects at gunpoint. One of the security guards fired shots at the suspects and fatal wounded one of them. During the shootout, one by-stander was shot in the leg. The other suspects managed to flee with the cash bag.

A case of armed robbery was reported at Pietermaritzburg police station. The case docket was allocated to the Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation. An intensive investigation was conducted as a result, on Monday 26 August 2024, the accused was positively identified as one the suspects in the aforementioned case. He was immediately arrested and charged with armed robb
ery.

He appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates court and the matter was remanded to 06 September 2024 for further investigation and he remains in custody.

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona welcomed the arrest and extolled the investigating team for the excellent work.
