Maletswai police station is now fully operational and the public can access services at the station.

The SAPS Management appreciates the patience of the community and assures them that the closure of a police station for decontamination is necessary so as to curb the spread of the virus.

Post Office branch manager in custody for burglary

KWAZULU-NATAL: A 55-year-old Post Office manager and his two accomplices both aged 30 are in custody following their arrest by Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation team on Saturday, 10 July 2021.

It is alleged that on 8 July 2021, the branch manager left the post office at Mayors Walk Road in Pietermaritzburg locked, safe and secured. The following day he came back to work and noticed that the strong room was opened. He also discovered that an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. A case of business burglary was reported at Prestbury and a case docket was allocated to Hawks members.

On Saturday, members pounced on the manager’s residence and found cash suspected to be stolen from the post office. Preliminary investigation led to his accomplices’ place where more cash was recovered. They were then placed under arrest and charged for business burglary.

They are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court today.

More firearms recovered in the Nyanga Cluster

WESTERN CAPE -Integrated and focused operations conducted in the Nyanga Cluster Precinct continue to result in significant successes. Two illegal firearms were recovered last night in Nyanga and Samora Machel areas.

On Saturday, 10 July 2021 at about 19:00, Lockdown II members conducted an intelligence driven operation at a premises in Rose Street, Heinz Park, Philippi East after receiving information about firearms. The members searched the house and found a 35-year-old in possession of a prohibited firearm and 17 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested and is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates court on Monday, 12 July 2021 on charges of possession of prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition.

The second firearm, a revolver was recovered from a suspect in Govan Mbeki Road, Nyanga. Members were patrolling in the area when they spotted the suspicious looking suspect. They searched him and found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and six rounds. The 33-year-old suspect was also arrested and detained. He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates court on Monday, 12 July 2021 on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated incident on Friday, 09 July 2021 at about 18:40, members of Lockdown II conducted patrols at Klipfontein Road, Cross Roads, next to the New Rest Shacks when they arrested two suspects aged 27 and 34 on charges of tampering with infrastructure and malicious damage to property and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Two suspects arrested whilst one is at large

EASTERN CAPE – SAPS detectives are searching for a suspect believed to be involved in a shooting incident on Saturday night, 10July 2021 at about 20:30, nearby Indoor Sport Centre at Highway, Mdantsane.

According to the reports, SAPS members were patrolling in the area when they heard a shooting in the vicinity. On investigation the police found two men, one of whom was already deceased whilst the other was injured. As they were still focusing on the incident, the police were confronted by three (3) suspects who appeared and fired gunshots at the police. An exchange of gunfire ensued which left one of the suspects fatally wounded whilst the other was injured. The third suspect fled the scene without trace.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear at this stage, however the police have opened murder, attempted murder and Inquest dockets for investigation. Two (2) suspects in their 30’s have been arrested and are currently receiving medical attention in hospital for the injuries sustained.

Police recover catalytic converters taken in a hijacking in Gqeberha

EASTERN CAPE – In an intelligence led operation, the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (OCI) in Gqeberha supported by the Anti-Gang Unit recovered catalytic converters worth over R14 million on Friday, 09 July 2021 in Greenbushes.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, 07 July 2021 at about 11:30, a truck transporting these catalytic converters departed from their premises in Deal Party and when they were in Forrest Hill near the cemetery, they were pulled over by a Quantum bakkie. A passenger from the bakkie approached the driver and his passenger and pointed them with a firearm. The driver was forced to drive to Harrower Road where he was shoved to the back seat of the truck. The suspect then drove the truck to an unknown location where the converters were off loaded.

The driver and his passenger were dropped off in Booysens Park and the truck was found abandoned in bushes in Nooigedacht. The total value of the converters is R15 million.

On Friday, 09 July 2021 at about 17:00 investigators from Provincial OCI followed up on information received about the possible storage of the stolen converters. With support from the AGU, a business premises in Bloem Laan in Waterkloof in Greenbushes was penetrated. A total of 10 pallets and 4 bags of catalytic converters were recovered. They were positively identified by the owner. It is suspected that all the stolen converters were recovered however a full audit is still to be conducted by the company.

Police are following up on further information relating to the suspects and arrests are imminent.

Suspects behind bars for allegedly dealing in drugs

FREE STATE – Two more suspects are expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate court on Monday 12 July 2021 for dealing in drugs after they were arrested on the N3 Highway near Harrismith.

On Friday, 09 July 2021 at about 15:30, members from Welkom K9 unit stopped a white Polo Vivo with two occupants, a male and female.

He searched the vehicle and found eight plastic bags containing chrystal meth drugs weighing 1.2kg to an estimated street value of R600 000 hidden under the dash board.

The driver, a 36-year-old man and his passenger, a 27-year-old woman, were arrested for dealing in drugs.
