Police effect 27 arrests as operations are underway to quell incidents of public violence that errupted overnight in parts of KwaZulu-Natal

PRETORIA – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have this morning intensified deployment and heightened visibility in response to incidents of public violence that erupted overnight in some parts of the Province since Friday, 09 July 2021. Meanwhile, police in other provinces are also on high alert, keeping a close eye amidst continued threats of widespread violence.

It is with this in mind that the South African Police Service has condemned these acts of lawlessness that seek to undermine the authority of the State; and issued a stern warning to those behind the threats of more violence to refrain from these acts of incitement circulated on various social media platforms.

To this end, 27 suspects have been arrested since yesterday on various charges that include: public violence, business burglary, malicious damage to property, and contravention of the DMA lockdown regulations. This comes after an unconfirmed number of trucks were torched and looting of several businesses in the Mooi River CBD. Efforts are afoot to track and trace more suspects.

At this stage, the N3 at Mooi River remains closed as police and local authorities have joined efforts to remove the torched trucks, debris and burning tyres that were used by protesters to barricade several roads. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes or approach with caution.

Police deployment will remain in place to ensure stability and prevent the possible erupting of further violence.

Assault rifles confiscated in the West Coast

WESTERN CAPE – On Friday, 09 July 2021 at about 19:45, members of SAPS K9, Crime Intelligence, detectives and Crime Prevention executed a search warrant for illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition at a farm in Vredenburg .

The members found a home made rifle and pistol including 9mm pistol loaded, Upon further investigation members found a cupboard with various assault rifles being; AK47 rifle with a loaded magazine, two double barrel shotguns and a variety of homemade firearm parts.

Various rounds of ammunition for assault rifles were found as well as a variety of projectiles, cartridges and fireworks. It is alleged the suspect used the gunpowder of the fireworks to make his own firearms and ammunition. A 32-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of these firearms and is detained. The value of the find has an estimated street value of R120 000. Investigation on the farm continues.

The suspected is expected to appear in the Vredenburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 12 July 2021, on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter, on Friday, 09 July 2021, members of Maitland Flying Squad followed up information after a fire arm was stolen earlier in the week in Kraaifontein area. The members got the .45 pistol back in Athlone area and one suspect age 31-year-old, was arrested and detained at Kraaifontein SAPS on a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The suspect will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Monday 12 July 2021.

Vaccination continues in Gqeberha

EASTERN CAPE – The second day of the SAPS vaccination drive that kick-started yesterday, 08 July 2021 in Gqeberha, has already started with numbers of police personnel queuing to get their vaccinations.

Gqeberha is the first of the 15 districts in the province to recieve the vaccination and the personnel are eager to get their vaccinations even on the second day. They take after the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga who received her vaccination yesterday as the leader of the police force in the Eastern Cape.

SAPS Senior Management in the Eastern Cape has expressed their excitement by willingness of foot soldiers during the Vaccination Drive that is currently taking place in Mount Road, Gqeberha.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General Thobeka Kunene spent time engaging with members on the queue to take a jab, and explained the significance of vaccination. She further called upon all members of the service to utilise the vaccination drive as a golden opportunity to vaccinate.

So far, more than eight hundred SAPS members have been vaccinated at Kemsley Park in Mount Road, Gqeberha, since the Vaccination Drive Launch that took place yesterday.

The vaccination drive will roll out to other districts and dates will be communicated.

Cable theft suspect in court, four on the run

FREE STATE – A 37-year-old man, Aaron Mukutirwa appeared at Smithfield Magistrate court yesterday the 08 July 2021 on possession of suspected stolen property and the case was postponed for further investigation to 15 July 2021.

The suspect was arrested on the 8 July 2021 at about 03:00 with 159 kilograms of communication cables worth about R200 000.

This after an alert was received from an off duty cop when he heard a noise of a falling object outside his yard at about 01:00 and he went outside to investigate.

A white Colt bakkie was seen loaded with cable and suspects were still busy cutting some more.

Five men including the driver were seen cutting the cables from the poles and and the off duty cop alerted the Community Service Center.

The Police spotted the vehicle fitting the description given and they tried to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle drove off in high speed and they gave chase. The suspect’s vehicle stopped and they vanished in the dark but the Police managed to arrest one suspect.

Disaster Management Act Regulations enforced in Joe Gqabi District

EASTERN CAPE – SAPS members, in a continuous effort, to contain and manage COVID-19 by intensifying the enforcement of the Disaster Management Act regulations yielded positive results during crime prevention endeavours.

On the 7 July 2021 at about 23:09, members of Visible Policing was busy with crime prevention activities when a vehicle was stopped and searched. On closer investigation, 31 litres of liqour were found in the vehicle.

The person was charged for contravening the Disaster Management Act Regulations and a fine was issued for R5000-00 and the liquor confiscated.

The acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Rudolph Adolph commended the members on good work and appeal to the community to work together with the SAPS to adhere to the Disaster Act Regulations in order to contain and manage Covid-19.

Florida police station temporarily closed due to a positive Covid-19 case

GAUTENG – All communities serviced by Florida police station are advised that the police station has been temporarily closed for decontamination after a positive test for Covid-19.

The Community Service Centre will be operating from Rainbow FM hall, at Cnr Sauer and Goldman Street.

The telephone lines at client service centre will not be accessible for the duration of closure.

The building will be undergoing decontamination and the community will be informed when the station will be operational again.
