SAPS re-visits members affected by fire disaster at Hlababomvu SAPS barracks

HLABABOMVU: SAPS Family, led by Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, once again visited members who fell victims to a fire disaster that destroyed their belongings at Hlababomvu SAPS barracks in 2020.

After the visit in July 2020, Women’s Network, Men for Change and Junior Management Core organised donations internally and externally, across the Eastern Cape Province to support SAPS members who lost all their belongings in the fire. Today, 24 June 2021, the SAPS Senior Management handed over donations that comprised of household goods and clothing vouchers.

Labour Unions, POPCRU and SAPU had an opportunity to express their support after contributing donations to seventeen Hlababomvu SAPS members.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga aligned the initiative with her Vision RRR. “This exercise talks to Revival, which is part of our Vision RRR,” she indicated.

The Provincial Commissioner urged the members to continue serving our communities with pride and diligence. She also extended a word of gratitude to Old Mutual for their contributions as part of supporting the affected members.

Lieutenant General Ntshinga concluded her speech by expressing management’s concern about the well-being of SAPS members on the ground.

Sophiatown police station temporarily closed for decontamination

GAUTENG – All communities serviced by Sophiatown police station are advised that the police station Community Service Centre has been temporarily closed for decontamination after a positive test for Covid-19.

The Community Service Centre will be operating as normal.

The telephone lines at client service centre will not be accessible for the duration of closure.

The building will be undergoing decontamination and the community will be informed when the station will be operational again.

Media invitation: SAPS bids farewell to District Commissioner of OR Tambo

MTHATHA – The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape will be honouring the District Commissioner of OR Tambo, Major General David Kanuka with a Medal Parade and Farewell Evening Function which are to be held on 25 June 2021 in Mthatha.

Major General Kanuka has served in the SAPS for more than 3 decades from the lowest rank of Constable up to the rank of a Major General.

With the advent of the district developmental model in the Province, he became the first District Commissioner ever to be appointed and was privileged to have his promotion conferred to him by the State President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa personally during the historic launch of the District Model held at Lusikisiki.

The Medal Parade will be held in Mthatha on Friday, 25 June 2021. Members of the media are invited to attend the day’s event.

Deputy Minister Buti Manamela introduces careers in artisanship to learners in Northern Cape, 25 Jun

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Mr Buti Manamela, MP, will roll-out the Decade of the Artisan advocacy campaign. The campaign will take place at the Northern Cape Rural TVET College, Kathu Campus on the 25th of June 2021.

Under the theme, “It’s cool to be a 21st century artisan”, Manamela will address a limited number of learners from local high-schools due to lockdown regulations. The aim of the learner engagements is to motivate learners to consider artisanship as a career of choice in the 21st Century as well as share information on critical scarce skills that will advance the economy of the country.

About 30 000 artisans should be produced annually by year 2030 if the country is to advance on the economic development agenda.

Suspect appears in court for theft

POTCHEFSTROOM – Vincent Aubrey Koorts (26) was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Monday, 28 June 2021 when he appeared before the Lichtenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 21 June 2021, on charges of theft of motor vehicles, theft of a trailer and theft of a caravan.

Koorts’ court appearance emanated from his arrest following separate cases of motor vehicle theft which were reported in March and April 2021 in Burgersdorp, Lichtenburg.

In the first incident, the owner of a white Tata Bakkie, a black Toyota Cressida, a trailer and caravan left her house on Tuesday, 23 March 2021. She returned on Friday morning, 26 March 2021, and discovered that her motor vehicles, trailer and caravan were stolen.

In another separate incident on Tuesday, 06 April 2021, Koorts allegedly borrowed a Kia Sportage from a 68-year-old complainant. He never returned the vehicle and later reported that he was hijacked in Pretoria.

Police investigations led to the arrest of Koorts, who is related to both victims. He is also a motor vehicle mechanic.

Suspect arrested with a Zip gun in Kuilsrivier

CAPE TOWN – The efforts of the Flying Squad to create a safer environment for the community led to the arrest of a 35-year-old suspect for the illegal possession of a homemade firearm, also known as a zip gun as well as ammunition. During the early hours of this morning the members conducted a search at a residence in Kuilsrivier when the discovery was made. Once charged, the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in Blue Downs to face the charges against him.

In an unrelated operation, members of the same unit confiscated two stolen motor vehicles, a Mercedes Benz Viano and a BMW X3 at a residence in Sunset Beach, Milnerton. In one of the vehicles, mandrax and the drug, mushroom with an estimated value of R100 000-00 were found. The circumstances surrounding the discovery are being investigated and arrests are yet to be made.
