Five alleged hijacking suspects in custody and stolen property recovered

GQERBERHA – Team work and immediate follow up on information led to the successful arrest of five alleged hijacking suspects and the recovery of suspected stolen property, only a few days after the hijacking was reported.

It is alleged that on Friday 4/06 at approximately 23:55 at NU 2, Motherwell the driver of a courier truck was on route to East London when he was forced to stop when a bakkie overtook him and stopped in front of him. He was confronted by five armed suspects who instructed him not to resist. They drove the truck towards Swartkops River where they dropped the driver off.

A case of Hijacking was reported at SAPS Kwazakele. During the investigation members from Gqerberha Flying Squad were tasked to follow up on information.

On Wednesday 9/06 at approximately 02:00 information led the members to Marine Drive, Summerstrand where they noticed four suspicious vehicles at the beach braai area. As the members approached the vehicles one Quantum minibus managed to speed away, however three vehicles, a Toyota corolla, Toyota Hilux and a Mazda 323 were blocked in. The members managed to arrest five suspects aged between 32 and 47. During the searched of the vehicles the members recovered a cell phone signal jammer, a chrome licensed 9mm firearm with one magazine and ammunition and various types of medical supplies with an estimated value or R700 000.00.

All three vehicles were confiscated and impounded for further investigation. Although the suspects have been found in possession of the stolen goods, further investigation is still being conducted to establish possible links to the hijacking of the courier truck.

The suspects were charged for possession of suspected stolen property and will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate Court on Friday 11/06.

Acting District Commissioner, Brig Thandiswa Kupiso applauded the excellent efforts of the members who acted on the information received. “The effective coordination of accurate information and swift intervention were instrumental in the arrests and recovery of the stolen goods. All those involved are commended for the breakthrough and the step closer for SAPS to combat and prevent further hijackings in the city,” added Brig Kupiso.

Police appeal for information to locate missing teenager

DESPATCH – The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Uitenhage is urgently seeking the community’s assistance in locating a 15-year-old girl who went missing on Friday, 4 June 2021. Isha Abrahams, who is residing at the Oosterland Youth Centre, Berg Street, Despatch, attended school at Gamble Street Secondary School, Jubilee Park, Kariega during the day, but never returned to the Youth Centre.

Isha was cladded in school uniform at the time of her disappearance. She is about 1,6m tall and weight 56kg.

Illegal gambling machines recovered during operations

JOE GQABI DISTRICT – Lady Grey SAPS endeavours to keep communities safe and secure yielded welcome successes during ‘Operation Vhuthu Hawe’ on 8 June 2021 from 20:00 until 02:00.

Several activities including enforcing of compliance to the DMA (Disaster Management Act) as well as high visibility with blue light patrols were conducted.

Positive information was also followed up at Mikhukhwini squatter camp resulting to arrest of five male suspects between the ages of 17 and 25. They were traced and arrested for the possession of suspected stolen property.

Electric and copper cables, cutting tools including a knife, scissors and screw driver were recovered. On further investigation it was determined that suspects targeted different areas in Lady Grey.

The suspects are expected to appear on the 10 June 2021 in the Lady Grey magistrate court.

During the operation a sleeping mattress and bed that were stolen were also recovered and handed over to the owner.

Positive information were followed up and one house, after a search five (5) illegal gambling machines were also confiscated.

The acting District Commissioner Brigadier Rudolph Adolph commended the stations on the different crime prevention endevours and all the good successes.

He also thanked the community for the positive information and support to the SAPS. “The community will see our presence and the criminals will feel it,” he committed that more similar operations will continue in his district.

Tshepo Ndweni reported missing

On the 4 June 2021 at about 15:00 the girlfriend to Tshepo Vincent Ndweni (35) reported him missing at Thabong Police Station.

She alleged that on the 2 June 2021, they engaged in an argument over whatsapp status. On the 3 June 2021 at about 07:45, Tshepo apparently visited his girlfriend at Kutloanong, Odendaalsrus to resolve the issue.

It is alleged that he told his girlfriend that he left his cellphone at his residence and did not know whether they will be able to talk again, then left.

On Friday, the 4 June 2021, the girlfriend Ivy decided to check him at his residence at house number 1523 Ntonga Street Thabong and he was nowhere to be found. It also emerged that he did not report for duty as expected.

His mother also checked at his workplace but all in vain. A missing person file has been registered for further investigation.

Observant police members arrested a 16-year-old man for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition

WESTERN CAPE – Our focus to significantly reduce the number of firearms in the wrong hands in this province, has led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male during police interventions in Lentegeur, Mitchells plain yesterday.

Observant members were busy with patrols when they responded to intelligence driven information. As they approached a local shop in Firethorn Street, they found the suspect armed with a 9mm pistol with three rounds of ammunition. The boy could not produce a valid licence to be in possession of such a firearm, and was arrested.

Once charged, he is expected make a court appearance in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate court.

Chief Executive Officer in court for R6.3m fraud allegations

EASTERN CAPE – A Chief Executive Officer of Melting Point, Gcisakazi Mdlulwa (40), appeared in the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Monday, 07 June 2021 for allegations of R6.3 million fraud.

It is alleged that on the 02 February 2017 a company by the name of Melting Point represented by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gcisakazi Mdlulwa held a meeting with Wild Coast Sun Mbizana Development Trust and proposed hosting of an O.R Tambo centenary programme planned for October 2017.

In terms of the proposal it is reported that Melting Point was seeking the permission to partner with the Trust wherein the Trust would provide funding for the purchase of the Dome that was to be erected in Mbizana where the activities of the centenary celebrations were to take place.

It is further alleged that she suggested that the Dome would also subsequently be an asset of the Trust which would be used for the benefit of the community. It is reported that she further advised that the Trust would be assisted in sourcing the grant funding from the National Lottery Commission.

The grant was applied for and approved, the funds were deposited into the Trust account. It is alleged that Melting Point provided the Trust with a quotation and an invoice of the Dome and cash to the value of R6.3 million was transferred to an account held by Melting Point for the Dome that was never erected. The matter was referred to the Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for probing hence her arrest on 03 June 2021.

The Mthatha Specialised Crime Court granted Mdlulwa bail of R5000 following her brief appearance. The matter has been remanded to 27 July 2021 to set a trial date.
