Seven-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Raped in Omusati Region


Omusati Region, Namibia – A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 57-year-old man in Ontanda A village, Omusati Region, last Thursday.



According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), the suspect, employed as a domestic worker at a neighbor’s house, is accused of taking the girl to his room and sexually assaulting her. Notably, the suspect is currently out on bail for a similar offense. He was scheduled to appear in the Okahao Magistrate’s Court on Monday. In a separate incident in the Kunene Region, a 28-year-old woman was reportedly raped at a community garden in Sesfontein on Friday. The police stated that the assailant entered the woman’s thatched house around 02h30, assaulted her, and proceeded to rape her without consent. No arrests have been made in this case, and police investigations are ongoing. Additionally, NamPol reported an attempted rape of a 35-year-old woman in Sesfontein on the same day. The perpetrator allegedly tried to force himself on the woman but was thwarted by an eyewitness. These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges of sexual violence in the region, with law enforcement actively pursuing the cases.

Man Arrested in Windhoek for Alleged Possession of Cannabis


Windhoek, Namibia – A 29-year-old man was arrested in Windhoek on Saturday for allegedly being in possession of cannabis, with a reported value of N.dollars 14,950.



According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), The Namibian Police Force (NamPol), in a crime report on Sunday, stated that the arrest occurred during a routine police stop and search operation on Wilbard Kapuenene Street. The suspect was allegedly found with 1,495 grams of cannabis. Investigations into the matter are ongoing. In a separate incident, NamPol reported a robbery in Grysblok, Katutura, where a man was allegedly robbed of his iPhone valued at N.dollars 30,000 on Friday. The assailant reportedly snatched the phone and fled on foot around 20h00. No arrests have been made, and the police are investigating the incident. Additionally, another man was robbed at a bus stop in Windhoek on Saturday, losing possessions worth N.dollars 12,000, including N.dollars 4,000 in cash and a cellphone. He was reportedly attacked and assaulted with a panga. As of Sunday, no suspects had been apprehended, and police investigations are continuing.

Namibia Police Report Three Suicides Over the Weekend


Omungwelume, Namibia – Three men reportedly committed suicide in separate incidents over the weekend, as detailed in a crime report issued by the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on Sunday.



According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), A 22-year-old man was found dead in Omungwelume village, Engela Constituency, on Friday. He was discovered hanging inside a building with a rope around his neck. This incident follows an earlier suicide attempt by the deceased two months ago. The motive remains unknown, and no suicide note was left. In another case, Adriano Beukes, also 22 years old, allegedly hanged himself around 23h20 on Saturday in the Block D residential area of Rehoboth, Hardap Region. His body was found by his younger brother, hanging from the roof of a storeroom, with no suicide note found and no foul play suspected. Additionally, in Keetmanshoop, a 39-year-old man, Richie Francois Roos, reportedly hanged himself between 21h00 and 22h00 on Saturday in Extension 12 of the Downton residential area. His girlfriend discovered the body hanging in the backyard. The family reported that Roos had been suffering from depression due to unemployment. No suicide note was found in this case either. Police
investigations are ongoing for all three incidents.

Oshikoto Region Records Traffic Violations and Crimes During Festive Season Operation


Oshikoto Region, Namibia – The Oshikoto Namibian Police Force issued a total of 93 traffic summons for violations during the festive season operation period, highlighting the need for vigilance on the road.



According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), Deputy Commissioner Wynand Neels of the Oshikoto Namibian Police Force, in a crime update issued on Monday, reported various incidents recorded between November 17 and 27, 2023. The region experienced two serious accidents resulting in six serious injuries and two fatalities. Neels noted that vehicle movement on national roads is moderate, but the wet and rainy season conditions, especially on gravel roads, have impacted drivers, leading to loss of control and accidents. In addition to traffic violations, the region recorded one alleged murder and one arrest, one rape and arrest case, an assault related to gender-based violence with two arrests, two stock thefts with two arrests, and four cases of possession of illicit goods with four arrests. Additionally, one arrest was made for contravention of petroleum products and energy. The festive season operation in the region is scheduled to end on January 17, 2024.

Two Arrested for Elephant Poaching in Zambezi Region


Zambezi Region, Namibia – Two individuals have been arrested in connection with elephant poaching in the Zambezi Region, as confirmed by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) on Monday.



According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), The ministry’s spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, reported that the suspects were apprehended with 15 elephant tusks at Namandumo village. The arrest was part of an intelligence-led operation. Muyunda explained that the two arrested individuals were part of a group of seven suspects who had allegedly returned from a poaching expedition in Botswana, with the other five suspects evading arrest. This incident follows another recent poaching case in the Zambezi Region on November 24, which resulted in the recovery of 24 tusks and the arrest of one suspect. Muyunda praised the anti-poaching unit in Zambezi, comprised of the Namibian Police Force and MEFT officials, for their effective work. He emphasized the unit’s strong intelligence base, which has been instrumental in these arrests. Muyunda’s statement served as a warning to those involved in wildlife crimes, stating that such illegal activities will lead to arrest and prosecution under Namibian law.

Nedbank Namibia Donates N.dollars 450,000 to UNAM/AMT Mobile Planetarium Project


Windhoek, Namibia – Nedbank Namibia has made a significant contribution to the University of Namibia (UNAM)/AMT Mobile Planetarium, aimed at addressing educational inequities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in Namibia.



According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), The bank’s donation of N.dollars 450,000, to be distributed over three years at N.dollars 150,000 annually, supports the UNAM/AMT Mobile Planetarium project. This project features an inflatable, interactive facility designed to bring astronomical education directly to students across Namibia, particularly in remote areas. The mobile planetarium offers a variety of programs tailored to different educational levels, from basic stargazing to exploring complex cosmic phenomena. Martha Murorua, Managing Director of Nedbank Namibia, explained to Nampa on Monday that this strategic investment aligns with the bank’s commitment to community development and enhancing access to STEM education. She emphasized the transformative power of education and the importance of uplifting the youth, who are key to the nation’s progress. The success of the planetarium project was evident during its pilot phase in 2019, when technical partners from the Africa Millimetre Telescope programme,
Radboud University, and the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy trained experts in Namibia. The project visited several schools in remote areas, such as Erongo and Nkurenkuru, demonstrating its impact and potential for further expansion.
