Redcliffe: The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, has conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the collapse of a four-storey building in Redcliffe, north of Durban. The tragic incident has claimed several lives and left others injured, as rescue operations continue at the site.
According to South African Government News Agency, Macpherson visited the scene along with KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, and MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Martin Meyer. During the visit, they were briefed by the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, emergency services, and built-environment officials overseeing the rescue operations.
The Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Councillor Cyril Xaba, noted on social media platform 'X' that four bodies have been recovered so far. Emphasizing the importance of focusing on ongoing rescue and recovery efforts, Macpherson avoided speculating on the causes of the collapse, promising a thorough investigation once operations conclude.
The Minister pledged to consult with relevant stakeholders, including the President of South Africa, to determine a suitable course of action post-recovery. Mayor Xaba, who revisited the site, lauded the rescue teams for their efforts and reassured the families of the government's commitment to recovering all individuals trapped.
A multidisciplinary technical team has been established to investigate the causes of the collapse, with a preliminary report expected to be made public next week.
