Pretoria: The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has conveyed its condolences to the De Kock family following the passing of Advocate Rodney De Kock, the Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions. De Kock succumbed to brain cancer on Monday, after being diagnosed in December.
According to South African Government News Agency, the NPA expressed that its leadership, staff, and colleagues in the criminal justice system would deeply miss De Kock’s commitment to justice and the rule of law. Fondly referred to as “DK,” he was considered a pillar within the NPA. The prosecutorial body extended strength to the De Kock family, friends, and NPA colleagues during this challenging period.
The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi, described De Kock’s passing as a significant loss for both the NPA and the nation, recognizing him as a dedicated lawyer and a steadfast advocate for justice. De Kock’s tenure as Deputy NDPP began in June 2020, following his appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa, and continued until his death.
Before serving as the Deputy NDPP, De Kock was the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Western Cape, marking a historic appointment as the first black individual to hold the position in South Africa. In his role as Deputy NDPP, he oversaw the National Prosecutions Service, managed Directors of Public Prosecutions from various divisions, and collaborated with law enforcement agencies on initiatives like the Financial Action Task Force to address national concerns. His contributions in these areas were particularly noted during his final months.
