Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the murder of a 27-year-old man who was killed after being accused of raping a 31-year-old deaf woman.

According to Schoemansdal police station spokeswoman Constable Nompilo Qwabe, the incident happened in Magogeni village on Monday.

“We are investigating a murder case after the community of Magogeni assaulted a 27-year-old man whom they suspected of raping a 31-year-old blind woman on Monday. The rape case had already been reported to the police. When police were called to the scene, they found that the community had assaulted the suspect. Upon rescuing him he then died at the casualty ward at Shongwe Hospital,” said Qwabe.

Qwabe warned the community against taking the law into their own hands.

“No one has yet been arrested in relation to the murder, but as the police we are warning community members to refrain from taking the law into their hands. Reporting to the police will make justice to prevail, but if they beat or kill the suspect they may end up in jail themselves. As we speak, we are hunting down those responsible for the murder from the very same community which thought they are bringing justice,” said Qwabe.
