Correctional Services Pushes Ahead with Disciplinary Action Against Suspended KZN Commissioner

Pietermaritzburg: The Department of Correctional Services has affirmed that it will continue internal disciplinary processes against suspended KZN Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele, following his appearance in court on charges of fraud and money laundering.

According to South African Government News Agency, Nxele appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates' Court on allegations of receiving bribes of approximately R100,000 per month. These bribes were alleged to have been received while he served as the Chairperson of the Special Bid Adjudication Committee in KZN from the State Capture linked security company, Bosasa.

The department has acknowledged the charges against Mr. Nxele, which are related to allegations of fraud and money laundering. They emphasized that the matter is before the courts and expressed their commitment to allowing the legal process to unfold without prejudice. Despite the ongoing court proceedings, Nxele remains on suspension, and the Department will continue to pursue internal disciplinary actions in line with applicable legislation and departmental policies, as stated in their official communication.

Nxele's court appearance followed his arrest by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC). His arrest was a result of a referral to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, after investigations were conducted on evidence provided by Angelo Agrizzi during the State Capture Commission. The investigations involved BOSASA contracts valued at approximately R20 million, as explained by IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame.

Nxele was granted bail set at R50,000, and the case has been postponed to September 16, 2026.
