Harrismith: The Harrismith police, under the leadership of Vispol Commander Lieutenant Colonel Magxunyana, and Acting Detective Commander Captain Vusimuzi Zwane, have successfully located a missing two-year-old child within 24 hours. Detective Sergeant MC Nkosinkulu from Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, along with other dedicated members of Harrismith SAPS, played a crucial role in this operation.
According to South African Police Service, the incident began on 12 September 2025, when Baphiwe Itumeleng Mokonahatsi, aged two, was reported missing. An extensive search was immediately initiated by the police. The committed efforts of Sergeants PL Tshabalala and LT Zimu, along with Constables N Daluka, MJ Mtagani, NP Makubo, AS Mngomezulu, and NM Moloi, led to the successful recovery of the child at Rainfall Dam the next day. The child was reunited with his family without any visible injuries and was taken to a local hospital for a medical check-up.
The swift and effective response highlights the commitment of the SAPS to handle such cases with the utmost seriousness, ensuring safety and security for the community. Parents and guardians have been reminded to stay vigilant and keep track of their children’s whereabouts as child safety and protection are key constitutional rights in South Africa. Additionally, it was emphasized that failing to adequately care for children constitutes a criminal offense.
