Department Advances R5 Million to SAFA Amid Financial Struggles

PRETORIA: The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has provided a R5 million advance to the financially troubled South African Football Association (SAFA) to ensure players receive their salaries before the festive season. This move comes as a relief to players who have recently brought national pride through their performances.

According to South African Government News Agency, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, emphasized the importance of supporting players who have represented the country admirably. The Minister’s statement on Thursday highlighted the necessity of the advance, which will be deducted from SAFA’s grant in the 2025 financial year.

The financial assistance is contingent upon SAFA’s leadership providing explanations for their financial difficulties and formulating a credible plan to prevent future fiscal issues. SAFA has accepted the conditions and expressed gratitude for the Minister’s support. The advance is particularly timely as the men’s team prepares for the
Africa Cup of Nations and eyes qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Meanwhile, the women’s team, Banyana Banyana, continues to build on their recent successes, including winning the African Women’s Championship and progressing in the FIFA World Cup.

In communication with the Minister, SAFA’s CEO attributed the financial strain to inadequate sponsorship revenues and delayed payments from partners. The association is currently developing a financial turnaround strategy aimed at boosting revenues and reducing costs, which will be presented after the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting.
