Departments Unite to Enhance Maths and Science Education

Kwazulu-natal: The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has announced a strengthened partnership with the Department of Basic Education to improve pass rates in mathematics and science.

According to South African Government News Agency, the collaboration aims to enhance the quality of teaching in these subjects. Nzimande emphasized the interdependence between education and science, noting that technological advancements like smartphones and electric cars are rooted in this relationship. He spoke during a two-day back-to-school oversight programme in the Harry Gwala District.

The Minister visited several schools, including Enhlanhleni Combined School and Reichenau Primary School, to engage with management and learners. The department distributes materials focusing on science, engineering, and technology careers and supports STEM talent identification through Olympiads and fairs.

Nzimande urged learners to respect themselves and others, highlighting the department's efforts to nurture future professionals. The programme aligns with the District Development Model initiative to boost learner performance and strengthen teaching environments.

Stakeholder meetings during the visit addressed school challenges, and Nzimande praised KwaZulu-Natal for its top matric pass rate in 2025. His visit also featured a Science Career Exhibition to inspire STEMI careers, supported by universities, TVET colleges, and companies like Sappi, which also provided learner support materials.
