Pretoria: A stark warning echoed across the Union Buildings’ lawns today as the country honoured police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty: those who target South Africa’s police will face the full might of the law. The warning was issued by Deputy President Paul Mashatile during the annual South African Police Service (SAPS) Commemoration Day.
According to South African Government News Agency, the day honours the lives of the 27 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the 2024/25 financial year. Deputy President Mashatile emphasized that attacking a police officer is tantamount to attacking the State itself, and such actions will meet the full force of the law. He advocated for harsher punishments for offenses against police officers and indicated a willingness to strengthen existing laws.
He assured police officers across the country that the government stands firmly with them, emphasizing efforts to ensure their safety and equip them adequately in the fight against crime. Mashatile highlighted the resourcing of specialized units, investment in advanced technology, and strengthening intelligence to combat those who target police officers.
The Deputy President acknowledged the pressing issue of criminality, particularly organized crime, as a significant concern. He cited the example of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni, who was killed by armed robbers, as a reminder of the dangers faced by police officers. He urged officers to use force proportional to the threats they face and not to surrender to criminality.
During the ceremony, Deputy President Mashatile, bereaved families, Acting Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia, and National Commissioner of the SAPS General Fannie Masemola laid wreaths at the SAPS Memorial Site at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The fallen officers were honored with a final salute, and their names will be engraved on the SAPS memorial wall.
Cachalia noted that the loss of a police officer is a profound loss to the nation and should be considered a crime against the state. He expressed gratitude and respect for the fallen officers and assured their families that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. The ceremony emphasized a commitment to the ideals for which the officers stood, inspiring continued efforts to promote safety, justice, and freedom in South Africa.
